What are volcanoes?

Volcanoes are landforms that are formed from layers of lava and tephra. They are one of the most powerful, dynamic, and visible forces on Earth.

Details and different parts of a volcano

Volcanoes have many parts and details to them. The different parts are the Magma Chamber, the Magma Conduit, the Main Vent, Lava Flows, Pyroclastic Flows, Sills, and Dikes. The Magma Chamber is where the magma is held, the magma conduit is where the magma will flow through, the main vent is where the lava flow and the pyroclastic flow are erupted out of, and the sills and dikes are solidified magma that once remained in the volcano.

How do they work?

Volcanoes are vents (openings) in Earth's surface and it is where gases, lava, and pyroclastic material are erupted out of. They contain magma and the magma collects into a magma chamber, which then will flow through a conduit up to the vent in the surface, and cause gases, lava, and pyroclastic material to be erupted. The remaining magma in the volcano that solidifies can form dikes and sills.

What do they look like?

Volcanoes vary in different heights, shapes, and magma type so this makes all of them different from each other. The main thing however, is that they are very tall landforms that are in the earth's crust, and they have an opening/vent at the top of them, which is where the lava erupts out of.

Where do they form?

The three most common places for volcanoes to form/occur are hot spots, spreading centers and fault zones, and subduction zones. There are around. 50-100 hot spots located around the world that have been found. The spreading centers are where tectonic plates will start to move away from each other, also known as a divergent Boundary, and volcanoes will then form when the magma moves toward the surface. At the fault zones, the crust is cracking and this is because of the movements of the tectonic plates, this has caused for volcanism and earthquakes to commonly occur around these areas. At subduction zones, the tectonic plates will start to converge, which is also known as a convergent Boundary, and the denser plate is pushed beneath the less denser plate. This causes for the denser plate to be heated by pressure, which forms magma, and the magma then rises towards the surface and composite volcanoes will form.

Are the eruption styles important?

Yes, the eruption styles are important because one way volcanoes are classified are by their eruption styles.

Diamond Head

-It is located in Honolulu, Oahu, HI

-It has been extinct for more than 150,000 years

-It got its name from the sparkle from the calcite crystals located inside of it

-Because it is extinct, you can climb Diamond Head and once you reach the top, you are able to see the view of the Waikiki Area and many parts of Honolulu
