To the BASD Staff, Parents, Students, and Community

Welcome to the BASD e-News. A BASD education works to IGNITE curiosity and imagination, ENCOURAGE creative cooperation and individual growth, and EMPOWER leadership and global thinking. The e-News is designed to share events and activities going on in the BASD and the Lehigh Valley and show how we are #builtbybethlehem. It is our hope that you find it informative outlining BASD student and staff achievements, BASD opportunities, and area events taking place.

The BASD e-News is divided into sections below. The sections include News and Events from BASD Media, the BASD Blog, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School's Sign of the Week, the Foundation for the Bethlehem Area School District, BASD MiniThon, BAVTS, Colleges/Community Colleges/Universities, ArtsQuest, Allentown Art Museum, Hanover Township Community Center, Lehigh Valley Business Group, Nutritional Information, BASD Job Opportunities, Events in the Area, and the Bethlehem Public Library.

If you would like to acknowledge a student or staff member or share an upcoming event, please feel free to e-mail my executive assistant, Barbara Clymer, at bclymer@basdschools.org.

Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN

Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District

The ABC Tips - S

Spinach: Spinach contains a high amount of vitamin A, which is known to boost your immune system and helps with good eye and skin health. Spinach contains multiple other beneficial nutrients including: vitamin K, calcium, vitamin E, and the B vitamins. Spinach is considered a nutrient dense food, because it provides a lot of nutrients for a little amount of calories. One cup of raw spinach is equal to about 7 calories. Try adding spinach to your salad or try adding sautéed spinach to your spaghetti for an extra serving of vegetable in your day.

Strawberries: Consuming one cup of strawberries meets and exceeds the recommended daily needs of vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to help boost your immune system, fights free radicals (associated with cancer and other diseases), and helps with good eye health. Try topping off your cereal or yogurt with strawberries or add some to your smoothie.

Sunflower seeds: Three ounces of sunflower seeds meets and slightly exceeds the daily recommendation for vitamin E. Vitamin E is known to protect the body against free radicals (associated with cancer and other diseases), boost your immune system, maintain good blood vessel health, and contributes to good skin, hair, and eye health. In addition, sunflower seeds contain unsaturated fats, which are known to be heart healthy. Consuming unsaturated fats is associated with a reduced risk of stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular disease. Try eating sunflower seeds as a snack or add them to your salads or stir fry for an extra crunch.

Sweet potatoes: Consuming just one sweet potato meets and exceeds the daily requirement for Vitamin A. Vitamin A is known to boost your immune system and helps with good eye and skin health. Generally sweet potatoes have an orange flesh, which means they are high in the antioxidant known as beta carotene. However, there are some sweet potatoes that have a purple flesh, and these sweet potatoes are high in the antioxidant known as anthocyanin. Whatever color your sweet potato is, it is packed with many beneficial nutrients. Try having mashed sweet potatoes as a side dish or making sweet potato toast in place of regular toast.
