ISLANDERS SOCCER: 2017 Signing class New Era. New Coach. New Team

Craig Shaw's first signing class on the Island features 16 players.

The 2017 Islanders Soccer signing class has two goalkeepers, four defenders, six midfielders and four forwards. The newest group of Islanders has an impressive resume with five team captains, 12 all-district and five all-state selections, 21 district or region championships, 15 state titles and six national finals appearances.

Head coach craig shaw

  • Named the head coach of Islanders Soccer on Jan. 5, 2017.
  • Second head coach in program history.
  • Arrived after spending six seasons at Fort Hays State, starting the program and winning two conference titles.
  • In 2016, led the Tigers to a 15-5-3 record, a MIAA Conference Championship, an appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 19th best goals against average in the country at 0.62 per game.
  • Named MIAA Coach of the Year in 2016.
  • Career record is 104-64-14.


  • Won an MIAA title with Fort Hays State in the second year of the program's existence.
  • Born in Australia.
  • Played professionally for Nerang Soccer Club of the Gold Coast Premier League in Australia.
  • Spent collegiate career at Carson Newman College, leading the Eagles to back-to-back conference titles and an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA DII Tournament in 2003.
  • Served as head coach at Ottawa University and as an assistant at St. Ambrose University.

GK | Overland Park, Kan. | Fort Hays State

  • Played the last two seasons at Fort Hays State, winning the 2016 MIAA Conference title, while allowing just 14 goals in 21 appearances.
  • Has a career .65 goals against average with 15 shutouts.
  • Named to the Academic Honor Roll for three seasons and selected to MIAA Second Team in 2016.
  • Won a state title for Saint James Academy and a state championship with her club team Kansas Rush.

Shaw on Flax...

A great last-minute pick up that will compete for game time immediately in the important position of goalkeeper. She has the work rate and winning mentality we are developing here and her experience of winning conference championships and making a NCAA tournament run all the way to the Sweet 16 will help our young team.


D | Plano, Texas | D'Feeters

  • Three-time First Team All-District selection at Plano East Senior High School.
  • Finished fifth at the 2015 ECNL National Finals.
  • Won the 2014 North Texas State Cup and reached the Region III Championship.

Shaw on Cupps...

Hanna is a tenacious defender who is very vocal at the back. She has a great set of skills that will translate well to the college game. Coming from a very good club at the highest level she will be an exciting prospect at any position.


M | Magnolia, Texas | Texas Rush

  • Ranked as a three-star midfielder by Top Drawer Soccer.
  • Three-time All-State selection, as well as being named to First Team All-District for three seasons.
  • Guided Texas Rush to the ECNL National Finals in 2014 and an appearance in the 2016 ECNL Champions League.

Shaw on Lawrence...

Due to being shorter, people usually underestimate Katie when they see her walk on to the field and that is a huge mistake. She wins most aerial duels against taller opponents, she never stops moving, always finding pockets, hard in a tackle and has such a passion for the game that we are going to enjoy coaching.


GK | Mansfield, Texas | Dallas Texans

  • Posted a 13-3-1 record with a goals against average of .82 and 14 shutouts at Mansfield Legacy High School.
  • As a junior, steered the Dallas Texans to 31 wins, allowing just 15 goals with 23 shutouts.
  • Backstopped the 2014 and 2015 Texas ODP teams.
  • Three-time Academic All-District selection.

Shaw on Hall...

Kyleigh has real potential to have a great college career. She has good size, very vocal, great confidence and will push the returners all the way in the goalkeeping department.


D | Phoenix | Sereno FC

  • Three-star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer.
  • Guided Pinnacle High School to 2014 state championship.
  • Named First Team and Second Team All-Region.

Shaw on Dodd...

Megan is an important piece for us as she can play anywhere across the backline which is going to give us great options this fall. She is very strong defensively both in the air and in a tackle but also has the speed and composure on the ball to help attack from the back.

SIRI o'Donnell

D | Longmont, Colo. | FC Boulder

  • Won the 2016 US Club Soccer National Cup on penalties.
  • Three-year starter and captain at Boulder High School.
  • Competed in the 200 and 400 freestyle and the 200 medley relay team for the Panthers swimming team.

Shaw on O'Donnell

Siri is a commanding center back due to her size and speed and brings a winning mentality having played for one of the top teams in Colorado. Not only is she great defensively she has such great composure on the ball and will be able to play out from the back, which will fit our possession style of soccer.


M | Bastrop, Texas | Austin Texans

  • Three-star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer.
  • Won the South Texas State Championship in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
  • Guided the Austin Texans to National Premier League Finals and regionals in 2016.
  • Reached the NPL Playoffs in 2017.

Club teammate of Cameron Lucas has been very well coached through out her time with the Austin Texans. She will give us the extra depth we need in the midfield and even has the flexibility of playing up top if we need her to.

  • Teammate with Ramon with the Austin Texans.
  • Won three straight South Texas State Championships from 2014 to 2016.
  • Played school ball for Cedar Ridge High School.

Shaw on Lucas...

Club teammate of Mariah Ramon is another who will have the invaluable experience of playing with J.D. Cochran’s Austin Texans. She gives us the competition for places in the very important forward line and has the advantage of a dangerous long throw too.

F | Pearland, Texas | Texas Rush

  • Took Pearland High School to three district championships, as well as regional/bi-district titles in 2014 and 2015.
  • Competed at 2014 National Premier League Finals after winning the NPL South Central title.
  • Selected to the USA Select u19 Girl's 2017 Invitational by American International Sports Teams.

Kaela is an exciting addition, as she will help give us depth and competition in our forward line as she can play anywhere up top. She has the great ability to get in behind using her speed or hold the ball up with her technical ability.


D | Manhattan, Kan. | Sporting Kaw Valley

  • Four-year letter winner at Manhattan High School and named captain as a senior.
  • Guided Indians to 2016 Centennial League Championship, a regional title and a third-place finish in the state.
  • Named Second Team All-State in 2015.
  • Represented ODP Region II in 2015.

My coaching staff and I have known Karmen for over five years and watched her grow as a player, so we definitely know what we are getting. She is going to bring a level of athleticism, intensity, work rate and sheer desire to be the best player she can be to either the outside or center back position.

I have watched Abby play for several years now and I am very excited about the impact she can make as an attacking midfielder as a freshman. She has a physical presence, the 1 v 1 ability, and the composure on the ball to find a pass, a great long-range shot and deceptive speed.

  • Named First Team All-District and selected as a captain of Rockwall Heath High School.
  • Earned First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention All-District laurels with the Hawks.

Shaw on Urbanus...

Addie is a player I believe that went under everyone’s radar and could make an immediate impact as a defensive midfielder in this conference. She has the DI build, great feet that can get out of tight situations, very good in a tackle and hardly ever gives the ball away.

  • Guided Nolan Catholic High School to three consecutive State Semifinal appearances.
  • Bagged 46 goals and 35 assists during three years with the Vikings.
  • Named Second Team All-District in 2015.
  • Took the Dallas Texans to the Dallas International Club Semifinals in 2016.

Shaw on Keoughan...

Emily is a very hard working outside back or forward that will allow us to have the depth and competition we want in these very important areas. She has had some very good coaching through club and high school and will be well prepared for college soccer.

  • Four-year varsity member at McKinney Boyd High School.
  • Guided the Broncos to a 10-6-6 record as a senior.
  • Teammate of Celia Hilsabeck.

Shaw on Mooibroek...

Bekah who is a high school teammate of Celia Hilsabeck is going to add a great physical component to our forward line. She is a workhorse that will cause problems to opposing backlines.

  • Played four seasons with McKinney Boyd High School.
  • Two-time First Team All-District selection.
  • Represented FC Dallas 99 during club career.
  • Named player to watch at NEPS Showcase.

Shaw on Hilsabeck

Celia is coming from the best ECNL team in Texas where this high level competition is going to help speed up her transition to DI soccer. I am really looking forward to what she can bring to our midfield.


F | Garland, Texas | Sting

  • Received All-District Honorable Mention honors at Naaman Forest High School.
  • Guided the Rangers to a playoff appearance behind a 14-6-1 record.
  • Tallied 15 goals with 14 assists during senior campaign.

Shaw on Gove...

Kayla is a player we are very excited about. She is very confident in the final third going 1-v-1 and can strike the ball with both feet very well. If she isolates opposing outside backs, she is going to terrorize them as they will have no clue which way she is going to go.
