Personal Life with God Cultivating a life of prayer and worship

Who are you listening to?

Do you hear God’s voice with clarity?

How confident are you in recognising his voice?

Time for Ear Training

Train your ears to the Spirit's voice. How?

Get the wax out of your ears. WAX = UNBELIEF

James 1:5-8 - If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

John 5:37-40 - And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

Remember - you want to hear a person (Jesus), not an answer or a truth.

Practice listening to the Spirit in the moment.

Don’t wait for your quiet time to practice listening. Don’t wait for the "emergency" to listen. Use the seconds of your day.

Ephesians 6:18 - And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 - So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - ... pray continually...

Practice now

  • Clear out unbelief.
  • Speak out faith.
  • Ask Spirit to speak.
  • Write down what he says.

Prayer Training

Romans 8:26 - In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

Romans 8:34 - Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

In order to pray well, we need to listen well.

Practice watching and listening.

Practice now.

Stop. Look. Listen. Pray.

Practice praying with authority.

Matthew 16:19 - I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

James 4:7 - Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Practice praying out Scriptures.

Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Ephesians 1:15-19 - For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

Practice perseverance in prayer

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

Luke 18:1 - Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Stoke the flames of passion and desire (cultivate love).

Worship Training

Psalms 100:4 - Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

Do you wait for an inspiring moment of revelation before you worship God? In other words, do you wait for God to move in you before you make a move toward God? Scripture is clear here - the first step is ours. We are called to begin with worship.

Love initiates. It doesn’t wait.

What tools of worship do you have?

Notice some tools here?

How to train in worship?

Use your mouth - This is one of the greatest tools given to you. Begin speaking out your thanksgiving to him. Start small and specific. Thank him for basic details of your day… your breath, bed, home, friend, family member, the sunshine or rain. From there, progress into thanking him for his miracles in your life (your salvation, healing, provision, etc.). You can follow David's example in Psalm 103.

Use the Psalms - Read one of the Psalms out loud. Perhaps make up a melody to go with the Psalm. Let God's Word lead you in worship.

Use your body - Don’t give in to passivity. Get up and get moving. God gave you hands, arms, fingers and toes for a reason. Surrender your body to the Lord in worship. Be creative with your body in worship.

Use music - Put some headphones on and listen to a good worship song. But, don't just respond with your ears. As you hear the worship, get your body active. Raise your hands… jump, cheer, kneel down, sing. God gave you your body as a tool of worship.

Make active worship a part of your daily routine. Practice getting active in your expression of worship to God. That is what he desires. And it is what he deserves.
Luke 7:36-50

What "reckless" act of love / worship could you bring to Jesus?

Deuteronomy 30:11-14 - Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

The Word is very near you. It’s already in your mouth and heart.

What word?

God’s Word & your Thank you!

Let the Word out!
