#choosetoinclude Special Olympics Virginia: 2016 Reach Report HIGHLIGHTS

At Special Olympics Virginia our team is constantly working with our school and community programs and with our donors and supporters throughout the Commonwealth to transform lives every day, everywhere and inspire the first Unified generation.

21,554 athletes served

Through Unified Sports®, the high performance pilot, Global Messengers and our traditional program of sports training and competition, we build athlete leaders who model fitness, inclusion, advocacy and improved performance on and off the playing field.

406 Unified schools in 52 jurisdictions

To combat the marginalization of people with intellectual disabilities regarding access to quality healthcare, we provide hundreds of medical examinations (dental, optometry, audiology, physical therapy and sports physicals) through our Healthy Athletes® and MedFest initiatives.

More than 750 athletes were screened in 2016, with the help of 364 medical volunteers. More than 4000 athletes have been screened since 2011.

With inclusive school programs in more than 400 schools (#1 among U.S. programs) in 52 jurisdictions involving more than 11,000 Special Olympics athletes and nondisabled teammates, we continue to promote inclusion, Unified Sports and youth leadership in the schools.

student reach of 314,487

With exciting special events like the Polar Plunge® and the Dulles Plane Pull®, a growing relationship with law enforcement through the Law Enforcement Torch Run® and productive local programs, we continue to build a bigger, better Special Olympics community.

11,238 volunteers

As we move forward, that bigger, better community will manifest itself in the improved performance of our athletes at school and at work; and in the building of positive attitudes regarding how our athletes view themselves and how we all view each other.
