Family Ties in Rio Grande City
When Rosa Gonzalez moved to Rio Grande City, she found a generous and welcoming community in the Hill Country of the Valley. Originally from the Texas Panhandle, she brought with her a passion for business and a desire to succeed. After working in retail for many years, she launched an office supply store in 1991. Initially opened out of her home, R.E. Supplies quickly became a family business with the help and support of her daughter, son and husband. For over 25 years, Rosa Gonzalez has faced the challenges of the business world with patience and resilience.
How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?
The interview process helps you find the traits that you are looking for. You want an employee who exhibits the same goals and philosophies that you have and bring them into your organization. I look for traits such as; dependability, trustworthiness and a desire to help others. Our goal is to create a connection with our customers and show the value of our products. Everyone needs to work together and enjoy what they do and that is what is important at the end of the day.
What advice would you give to others who may want to start a business?
Plan ahead. It is important to have a business plan and set long time goals for your business. This will help you stay focused on what is important in reaching your goals. You need to evaluate the feasibility of the product or service that you will be providing with the needs of your community. And always be positive. Things will not always work out the way you think they will at the beginning, so you need to be open, flexible and adjust to changing trends and technologies in business.

What are your goals?
My goals are having a successful and profitable business which creates opportunities and enables us to give back to our community. We have had many employees continue their education and careers in finance or business that have applied the skills they gained while working with us. A lot of students who have come and gone through our doors, have come back to tell me the hands-on experience and training they received helped them in their education. That has been the most rewarding part of being a business owner.
How have your goals and values changed since starting your business?
Goals change over time and you are constantly reviewing and adjusting to the demands of your business. When your set goals are achieved, it is important to set higher goals. This constant flux means your business is growing. I believe your values don’t change and only become stronger as you grow. One firm value is taking care of our customers and our community. That has been the backbone of our business.

What are you top key elements for starting and running a business?
I believe planning, understanding budgeting and financing and the importance of customer service are important. Many business owners need to understand that, on average, a business will not see a profit for the first 3 years. I have experienced it myself, but have found that with patience and resilience, it is possible to grow and succeed in the business world.
