Garnet Sports Update Dec. 12, 2016

Women's Basketball kept right with the Ursinus Bears on the road last Wednesday, pulling within one point in the third quarter. The Bears ran away from the Garnet in the third to take the game 64-47.

Freshman point guard Elizabeth Stiles (left) scored a career-high nine points and dealt out four assists. Fellow first-year Lindsay O'Sullivan also scored nine points. She nabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Junior Melanie Ackerman scored a team-high 11 points.

Swarthmore returns to the court on Jan. 2 for a tournament at Gettysburg College.

No. 22 Men's Basketball improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 75-67 win at Ursinus College on Wednesday night.

The lead changed hands repeatedly in Wednesday's game with Swarthmore finally taking the lead for good with 50 seconds left on a 3-pointer from Zack Yonda. Yonda, who scored 11 points was one of four Garnet players in double-figures. Cam Wiley (left) led Swarthmore with a career-high 21 points. Matt Brennan added 15 points and Henry Cousineau scored 12.


Men's Basketball is the top team in the country in all of NCAA Divisions I, II and III in rebounding margin. The Garnet are averaging 18 more rebounds per game than their opponents.

Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams Announced

Swarthmore had five student-athletes picked for the highly-selective Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area teams. (Clockwise from top left) Sarah Wallace, Hannah Lichtenstein, Caroline Khanna, John Gagnon and Irina Bukharin all were chosen to their sport's team of the best student-athletes in the Philadelphia area from NCAA Division I, II and III schools.

Khanna Named Scholar All-American

Swarthmore senior biology major Carolina Khanna was named as one of the top soccer student-athletes in all of Division III for the second year in a row.
