Spring 2019 Recruiting Season Overview

This semester brought another great recruiting season here at James Madison University! We are successfully continuing to transition to Handshake, and we are seeing great increased student participation on the platform. Our students appreciate your activity on campus and the value you place on meeting them where they are.

On-Campus Recruiting

  • Employer Interview Schedules: 96
  • Conducted Interviews: 648 (and counting!)
  • Skype Interviews: over 100 (and counting!)
  • Recruiting Events: 108

InterviewPREP

InterviewPREP—an event where students had the opportunity to have a practice interview with employers and professionals—was held on January 29 in our Interview Center to help students feel better prepared and confident for upcoming professional opportunities. We welcomed 10 employers to campus and had over 50 students take advantage of this event. Employers networked with faculty from all across campus over lunch to learn more about fields of study, JMU, and how they could get involved on campus.

Professional Pathways

We partnered with the College of Science and Math to offer the inaugural Professional Pathways event on February 5 to help students prepare for the world of work. We were pleased to have 53 students attend and 8 career professionals—many of whom were program alumni—return to share their experiences with students.

The World of Entrepreneurship

We partnered with Alumni Relations to offer The World of Entrepreneurship Event on February 8. We had over 60 students, faculty, and staff attend. The alumni panelists were inspirational and encouraging.

JCPenney Suit-Up

The JCPenney Suit-Up Event on the evening of February 10 was a success! Over 170 students came out despite the wintry weather and found great deals on professional clothes. Several students personally told us how much they appreciated the event.

Campus-Wide Career Fair

Our Campus-Wide Career Fair brought 167 employers, represented by more than 300 recruiters, and over 1500 students attended. We were also excited to be partnering with departments around campus with their specialized career fairs this semester, including the Hart School of Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management Career & Internship Fair, CISE Career & Internship Fair, and Teacher Recruitment Day.

CISE Career & Internship Fair

We collaborated with the College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) to host 41 employers, over 100 recruiters, and almost 300 CISE and CIS students on February 26. Students shared their appreciation for offering this opportunity for career engagement. It definitely was a positive experience all around. Fall date will be Wednesday, September 18th.

Teacher Recruitment Day

On March 19, we welcomed over 80 schools, districts, and recruiting agencies to meet with our graduating College of Education students at Teacher Recruitment Day. In a field with high demand and a tight supply of teachers, the fair and afternoon interview period enables education professionals to meet with and conduct interviews with our highly qualified and experienced graduating student teachers. For students, they have the opportunity to meet with multiple potential employers at once and connect with familiar and unfamiliar schools and districts. The 125 students participated in nearly 300 interviews, and multiple job offers were made on site.

Employers who attended the event in the past shared the following:

"It gave us great ideas for events to participate in as well as connecting us with the right people to help us reach our recruiting goals."
"My favorite part of the conference was the breakout sessions where we learned more specifically how to engage students of a particular college."
"One thing I learned was to focus on student skills rather than their specific major."

News & Opportunities

Don't miss our #JMUEEO Twitter chat!

Join our tweet chat about EEO statements, which will be hosted at @jmucap on Tuesday, May 21. While your equal opportunity commitment should not end with your EEO statement, learn how to take your EEO statement to the next level to attract better applicants.

Thanks for helping to fund our Unpaid Internship Scholarship!

Registration fees from the Campus-Wide Career Fair funded scholarships for JMU students in unpaid internships last summer, and we look forward to offering the scholarship again this year! Thank you so much for your participation in the fair and your contribution to JMU students’ professional experiences at JMU and beyond.

JMU students visited Roanoke employers!

We partnered with JMU's College of Business and the Roanoke Regional Partnership to take students on a Roanoke Career Trek on Friday, March 29. Students visited Delta Dental/Corvesta and AECOM. In addition to students from the College of Business and the College of Integrated Science and Engineering, two JMU alumni from the local Roanoke alumni chapter attended. The career trek was featured by WDBJ Television Station as well.

We have impressive student engagement on Handshake!

In our second semester with the career management platform Handshake, over 32% of the student body—a whopping 7,777 students—have already used the platform. Handshake replaced Recruit-A-Duke this summer as JMU students’ online tool for job and internship searching, appointments with CAP staff, employer events and CAP workshops. The engagement we’ve seen in Handshake has already surpassed the highest levels we experienced with Recruit-A-Duke.

We want to feature you on Instagram!

Every Friday, we feature someone from the JMU community on our Instagram account. If you have a JMU student or alum on your team that you’d like to feature, send a photo and quote to jmucap@gmail.com.

Looking for an opportunity to give back? Hints of spring have you in the mood to clear out those closets? Send a little joy to our students by donating your new or gently used professional attire to the JMU Career Closet.

We are seeking donations for professional attire for students to use free of charge, so no student will be left out of professional opportunities due to not having the proper attire.
