A Place in Time Art Foundations II

2nd Floor Morning Star Gallery, Stuart Hall

During a time of social unrest, this project encapsulated the tension that exists between the past, present and future of a specific place. After studying the work of Mark Bradford, students chose a place in time that is important to them–with many focusing on the topic of human rights, students researched, studied and identified the historical complexities of their chosen place. Utilizing material as a metaphor, this project allowed for an excavation to take place with an emphasis on tactility, process and discovery. Learning about these different layers and processing them through the making of their artwork gave each student a more embodied and deeper understanding of the place they chose.

“If ever there was a moment when you need abstract work to understand the world, it would be now,” Mark Bradford reflects on his quarantine paintings, titled Q1, Q2, and Q3.
