International Day of Older Persons 2019 Social Media Toolkit - HelpAge USA

A Campaign to Confront Ageism

Theme and Purpose

The theme of this year's International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is Journey to Age Equality. HelpAge USA hopes you will join us in a campaign to debunk ageist myths, stereotypes about people based solely on their age. We need your voice to help set the record straight.

Leading up to the United Nations event for IDOP on October 10, HelpAge and organizations across the HelpAge Global Network will shed light on where ageism happens, the forms it can take, and why people of all ages are worse off because of it.

How to Participate

Ageism is so pernicious because it remains an embedded and accepted form of prejudice in societies around the world. That's why this campaign will call out ageist myths and show why they're simply not true. Take part in the myth-busting on social media (twitter, facebook, and instagram) and encourage your followers to do the same. See this example post for how to join in on the myth-busting:

Myth: Older people are one homogenous group. Reality: Among adults 60 and over, significant diversity exists across cultural background, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, family structure, identity, disability, and life perspective. #BustAgeism

Get others involved

In order to build national awareness around the problem of ageism, we need more people to recognize and discuss the problem. HelpAge USA is asking the world:

How has ageism affected you?

We encourage organizations and individuals to respond and ask their followers to do the same. By sharing personal stories about ageism's harmful effects, we hope others will question their own unconscious age biases and realize why societies must change.

Reality: The Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that age 64 (the survey’s median age) was perceived as being too old for to be considered for employment by most employers surveyed. Although it is illegal to use age as a determining factor for employment, ageism in the workplace is alive and well.
