Lent: Day 38 40 days of repentance, renewal, and returning to God

Thursday: Day of Agony

This was Jesus’ last day before crucifixion. Jesus was deeply grieved in His heart, yet the disciples did not know this and just kept fighting among them. When Jesus said, “My soul is troubled,” someone should’ve asked, “Rabbi, why are you so troubled?” Jesus would have explained then. But no one cared to find out. No one was listening. No one tried to understand Jesus' heart. Instead, they only argued among themselves, asking “Who is greatest?”

At this time, Jesus foresaw the suffering on the cross—the brutal beatings, whippings, and death. How distressed our Lord must have been!

Yet, the disciples were fighting among themselves.

This was during the Last Supper. Jesus was already heavy-laden with the unbearable weight of the cross.

While Jesus was fighting death...

...the disciples were fighting among themselves, pounding nails into Jesus' heart.

Nevertheless, Jesus still loved them. He loved His own to the very end.

John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Out of this love, Jesus—the Creator, the King of kings—began washing the feet of the disciples. He put the disciples on a high chair, and lowered Himself to wash their dirty feet.

John 13:4-5 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

The disciples should wash the teacher’s feet. The slaves should wash their master’s feet. How completely opposite this was!

What does this teach us? Whenever we want to be served, we must fall on our knees and pray: “God, please forgive my pride and conceit of looking down on others!”

When we sincerely love Jesus and live for Him, humility comes to us naturally, and so do blessings also!

Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.

On this day of Passion Week, let us remember how Jesus loved us. He loved us so much that He forgot His own suffering and sorrow.

Jesus never cared for Himself to love us to the end. Let us remember this love came with much suffering and sacrifice.

Tonight, the Lord is pouring out such love upon all of us. Amen.

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
