Hello, May!

How quickly the spring semester is coming to a close! Graduation for our seniors are just a few days away! Exciting things are happening around campus, and there are many activities in our area to enjoy this time of year! Gardens are popular among many of us, and Deer Oaks provides helpful information in this month’s newsletter around planting a family garden. No matter how experienced a gardener you might happen to be, these tips come in handy from the beginner to the most experienced. For example, some focus areas include determining your layout of the garden, where to plant the garden, and instructions for watering your new plants. Remember! Valuable resources similar to these are always available through Deer Oaks – 24/7. Clink the link below for access instructions.

Deer Oaks' Perks

Deer Oaks offers a wide variety of perks that go beyond counseling. The links below provide information about a few of Deer Oaks’ most popular perks.

Free Basic Will Preparation

One of the many resources available through Deer Oaks is free basic will preparation. Deer Oaks has partnered with NOLO to help guide you through the process of creating a simple will. Instructions for accessing the code for NOLO are available on the Deer Oaks website.

Is Nolo's simple will right for you? Nolo's online will is a straightforward, legally valid document. While it should work well for most people with typical assets (i.e., a house, a car, savings, and investments), there are situations that demand more than a simple will. Listed below are some situations in which you should consider getting expert advice or, at the least, investigate your options:

  • If you think that you or your spouse may leave assets worth more than $2 million, your estate may owe federal estate tax, and you should investigate tax-saving strategies.
  • If you anticipate family fights, see a lawyer for advice on how to stave off bad feelings and legal battles.
  • If you want to set up a long-term trust for a child with special needs, find out how you can provide for your child without jeopardizing government benefits.
  • If you are a resident of Louisiana. Louisiana based its estate planning laws on the Napoleonic code, while all the other states based their laws on English common law, and Louisiana's estate planning laws remain unique. If you have questions about estate planning in Louisiana, please use your attorney referral benefit to be referred to an estate planning attorney practicing in Louisiana.
