Serving Those Who Served Our Nation

Veterans of the United States Armed Forces have sacrificed more than others can imagine. It is an honor and privilege to work with veterans, to support them and their families as they adjust to life after serving in the military. The Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) is one of the key organizations that supports Arizona’s community of veterans. We work daily with our community partners to connect them with employers and other services to make their transition back to civilian life successful and fulfilling.

The DES Veterans Program helps veterans transition the skills they acquired while serving in the Armed Forces into the employability competencies employers seek. Under the Jobs for Veterans States Grants Program, eligible veterans are entitled to receive priority services in job referrals and training by DES staff through the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP). Additionally, Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVER) work with employers to help them hire veterans directly.

DVOP specialists collaborate with community partners to support veterans with significant barriers, providing case management services that target the obstacles in their lives so they are able to obtain employment. Our staff help veterans find professional clothing and connect them to housing resources, food assistance and more on their path to employment. For veterans who do not have significant barriers to employment like homelessness, substance abuse or a disability, employment specialists from ARIZONA@WORK are available to provide priority workforce services.

Another important resource available to veterans is the Veterans Toolkit. Developed by the Arizona Department of Veterans Services (ADVS), it helps connect veterans with the means to acquire employment, including transportation, supplies and clothing. Our partnership with ADVS has led to a considerable increase in utilization, and we are pleased to connect even more veterans with this critical resource.

Today and always, we continue to honor our vets who unselfishly committed themselves to serving our nation. With many DES employees being veterans themselves, we have a unique fervor in ensuring veterans have every opportunity to continue to be successful for themselves and their families. Watch the amazing stories of Adam Garrard and Greg Salazar, two veterans who have continued their public service through DES.

Happy Veterans Day to all who've served, and happy birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps.
