How does scientific knowledge changes overtime?

Journal Entries

04/11/17

Today I read about the placebo effect and the ‘care effect’. I learned that there were far higher results when the doctor treated the patients with more care and asked them about their personal life. Sometimes it is better to treat patients nicer than treat patients with unneeded medicine.

Today I took the quiz on Natural Sciences and I got 8 out of 10 so I passed.

The primary aim of my AOK Natural Sciences is to explore how scientific knowledge changes overtime. Using my resources in the TOK textbook and discussing with Mr Morrison I will explore the Natural Sciences.

We will be writing paragraphs for our badge project which focuses on a specific question which we would like to explore. I have chosen to explore howhow scientific knowledge changes overtime and I will be using the placebo effect as an example.

04/13/17

Today we peer edited out paragraphs. I realized I needed more analysis and less of my example. Overall, I felt as if my paragraph had substance and it made sense to me and my peers. However, I still need a lot of work on it in order to make it better.

Knowledge Questions

How can it be that scientific knowledge changes over time?

How can one decide whether one model/ explanation/ theory is better than another?

How can we know cause and effect relationships given that one can only ever observe correlation?

How does scientific knowledge change overtime?

Scientific knowledge is able to change overtime based off experience and previous knowledge. For example, studies have caused the placebo effect to become a widely accepted phenomenon in today’s society. Although this ‘alternative medicine’ has no true scientific evidence behind it, studies have still found improvements in patients. Often times when patients are receive treatment, even if it’s just a sugar pill, their status will improve. Scientist believe this is caused by a psychological trick where the body believes that since it is receiving treatment the body should be improving, and so it does. However, as more research was conducted new studies have shown that there is more to the placebo effect than just the pills the patient receives. Using the scientific method, patients who who were looked at by doctors who were very caring and asked about their families had much higher success rates than those who had a doctor who didn’t engage with them. This furthers our knowledge about the placebo effect and who factors contribute to it. The scientists who conducted these experiments based their conclusions off of their experience and their previous knowledge. The scientists had previous knowledge about the placebo effect, however, through new experiments that they conducted they created new experiences and gained new insight into the placebo effect. Thus, furthering the knowledge about the placebo effect and changing the outlook of scientific knowledge. Overtime, as new experiences are created new data is presented, and new ideas arise which alter what we know scientifically.

Revised Version

How does scientific knowledge change overtime?

Scientific knowledge is able to change overtime based off experience and previous knowledge. For example, our understanding of the placebo effect has changed due to recents studies. Using the scientific method, patients who who were treated by doctors who were very caring and asked about their families had much higher success rates than those who had a doctor who didn’t engage with them. This furthers our knowledge about the placebo effect and who factors contribute to it. New discoveries were made through the scientific method. The scientists had previous knowledge about the placebo effect, however, through new experiments that they conducted. they created new experiences and gained new insight into the placebo effect. Thus, furthering the knowledge about the placebo effect and changing the outlook of scientific knowledge. Overtime, as new experiences are created new data is presented, and new ideas arise which alter what we know scientifically.

Extension Proposal

I chose to add this extension proposal because it provides valuable information on how the scientific method works. The scientific method is a integral part of gaining knowledge and making new discoveries. This website is good extension proposal because it breaks down the scientific method and describes its uses and applications.
