Excel is used for managing data and not just it there is so much more that it can do. It can communicate with third party programs. You can define formulas in its cells and it can perform calculations using the data that you import and give you final results. What you can say is there are some things common between the two programs. Word is a word processing program to write papers and documents,Excel is for creating spread sheets and analyzing the data that you enter into these spreadsheets.
