Spirit of Saginaw Band Director's Corner

How did 6 weeks fly by so fast? With all the hustle and bustle, I still am thankful that I get to watch the sun rise each day while listening and leading our fantastic students. There is nothing more beautiful than the golden-pink hues rising to a sonorous concert F.

As the first 6-weeks closes, and we begin a new 6-weeks grading cycle, grade checks and eligibility will be run. Any student who is not passing a class is ineligible to march. Please help your student in any way to support them getting tutoring during lunches/after school so that they can stay and be part of this CA$H Contest season. Students are able to regain their eligibility at the 3-weeks mark (they must be passing all classes).

October is marching contest season and we are excited to see how CA$H will be received as we push to qualify for the UIL State Marching Contest. First we will compete at the Region Marching Contest (Chisholm Trail HS, October 15). At this level, we are looking to earn a Division 1 rating from the three adjudicators. This will advance us to the Area Marching Contest (Birdville Athletics Complex, October 26). At this level, we are ranked on a points scale. For every 5 bands in attendance, 1 group will be sent to the State Marching Contest (San Antonio, November 4-5). So for example, if there are 9 bands at Area, only 1 is eligible to advance to State. If there are 10 bands, then 2 are eligible to advance. The competition is FIERCE, but we also believe in the grit of the Spirit of Saginaw.

Our other contests and events this season include US Bands Burleson Showcase (October 5), and the Birdville Marching Contest (October 12). The EMS Band Expo will be October 9 at Chisholm Trail HS from 7-8:30. Get with the Band Boosters and please purchase a shirt. All proceeds will go to help our band students and provide private lesson scholarships.

The original October 12 contest hosted by us at SHS has been cancelled due to unforeseen conflicts and a low enrollment of groups. US Bands has been in touch and researching the right dates to avoid other local/UIL events that attract programs like ours. We are beginning to look at possibilities for next year.

We unfortunately are unable to attend the BOA Contest in Waco on October 19. The contest is full and we are wait-listed. So instead, we will use the morning for a Clinic with Mr. Robb who helped design CA$H and has led our leadership camps with SASI. The clinic will be 4 hours and provide an outside perspective and insight as our students prepare for the UIL Area Contest...which will determine if our incredible band will qualify to advance to the State Marching Contest!

Shout Outs & Significants

It has been a WHIRLWIND first 6 weeks!

  • Our Drumline defended their title in the HEB Drumline Contest and finished 4th.
  • The marching show is almost completely on the field! Be ready to see this show continue to change and evolve as we press forward!
  • Props are finalized. Special thanks to our amazing SOS parents who helped throughout from July - September
  • Our meal and chaperone crew! You all have been so dedicated and selfless for our students.
  • Thank you to all who participated, advertised and have donated in our only two fundraisers for the year: FanPledge and Mattress Fundraiser. We aim to only do two high profit/ low headache fundraisers as a full band to supplement this program and give back to our students as much as possible. Thank you to those of you who answered the call and are supportive.
  • Faith Sears for doing an awesome job in spreading the word in newsletters, social postings, for setting up booster fundraisers/sponsorships with local eateries and entrepreneurs.

Private lessons have been up and running! If your student is not enrolled, we HIGHLY encourage they get connected with our Private Lesson staff. The more students in lessons getting one-on-one assistance, the stronger the band program will be. Preparation impacts results. "Better individuals, better band"

It's hard to believe, but there are only 6 weeks left of this year's marching season. Let's continue to make CA$H one for the memory books!
