Galley Hill Primary School Newsletter 9th October 2020

A busy week in school with lots happening. We had the Sports Partnership in school, working with all of the children. We have also been researching and learning about influential people, during Black History Month. On Monday we read a story about Rosa Parks and discussed the importance of standing up for what we think is right, as well as understanding what discrimination and inequality means.

School life

It's been a real exciting outdoors week in the nursery! The children have been exploring the den area and have made their own den. They have used their imagination and creativity to use the dens for different purposes. They decided that the den they made would be used to hide form bears! We have a bear that sleeps in the trees in the playground! They have used the bigger den as a pirate ship with lots of "Ar hars" and "There's the treasure!" The children also got the opportunity to visit the school pond. There they listened and looked for insects and frogs.

This week Reception have been finding out about different jobs in the community. Some of the children chose to build or paint fire engines and role play being firefighters. The children have been doing lots of sorting this week in maths. The children have brought home a phonics sheet to reinforce the work we have been doing in class. Please can you upload it into Tapestry if you are able to. Please can you bring your purple book bags from next week, as reading books will be going home.

Y2 were regrouping ten ones for one ten using base 10 equipment. They really enjoyed it.

In Year 4 this week, they have been exploring similes to add extra description to their writing for their portal story.

The Sports Partnership came into school this week to spend the whole day with us. In the morning they worked Key Stage 1 for their Outdoor Adventurous Activity morning of 'I'm a school child, get me out of here!'. All children thoroughly enjoyed taking part. In the afternoon Key Stage 2 took part in a Cross Country. They all took part and some dug deep to push themselves showing true determination and resilience.

There is also a note about admissions for secondary school. The deadline is 31st October 2020. Parents are asked to apply online, if possible. If you have any difficulty with this, please contact the school admissions team on 01642 837730 / 837740 / 837702.

Head boy and head girl

This week I have had the pleasure of working with the Head Boy and Head Girl to discuss what we can do to support all the children in school. The well being of the children in school was something we talked about, and with tomorrow being Mental Health Awareness day, we thought it would be a great time to share their well being bingo with you. try and tick off a different activity every day, till they are all ticked off. You can even think of some of your own.

To celebrate Black History Month - we would like you to share your art skills, poetry skills and general writing skills by producing any work to celebrate Black people throughout History. This will then all go on our board in the hall.

Thanks you, Olivia and Ben

PARENTS' Forum

Thank you to everyone who was at the Zoom meetings this week. It was a real delight to get to speak to you, albeit via technology. We discussed what we achieved last year, what we had put in place during March to July, what we have done since September and what we will be doing this year. We also discussed our Remote Learning plan, which can be found on the school website, under the Covid Section. We will be continuing our Talk for Writing journey, working with the Maths Hub to work on a project in school, develop how we teach Geography and History as well as insuring we promote the Arts. Lots of exciting things to happen this year! I will be holding the forum every half term and will continue sharing what we are doing, as well as discussing what we are doing well and taking feedback to help improve things such as communication and what we can do to further develop our links with yourselves and the wider community in what is an unusual time.
