MEET THE TEAM

"I think it is a fabulous idea and I'm excited to read it." Mr Inman

Inspirational Art

Miss Leonard and a team of students have been working hard to improve the school’s image. It welcomes the learning community into the school building.

A team of students have helped Miss Leonard to create artwork that makes a statement around the school.
‘Visitors and staff have commented upon the new feel of the building. The artwork gives students ownership and pride. It tackles real topics in society. For example, LGBTQ+ and women’s rights.’-Miss Leonard.
"The artwork gives the school new life. It makes me feel proud to know that fellow students have contributed to the art." –Jake Chambers Yr 9

Enterprise Club

The Enterprise Club aim to raise money for the food technology department in our school by making a range of food and textile products. The team of nine students aims to have a community sale at a local school of all of the products they’ve carefully prepared.

“The students are keen to get involved and it’s a fantastic opportunity for our school.” –Mrs McNab
Teamwork and hard work is paying off for the enterprise team

Club members are learning teamwork skills by running food production and packaging lines. They’ve planned mood boards and gathered ideas to make their products, and decided prices as a team.

Nice job, team!

Accelerated Reading

There are hundreds of books covering all interests and abilities

Accelerated Reader is a programme used within many schools across the country. You read a book and then take a quiz – it’s that simple! You receive points for every quiz you complete, which then can be exchanged for prizes which include: chocolate, sweets, books, DVDs, games and much more. Take a quiz, earn points and win prizes.

The programme allows students to improve their reading skills which also aids in the development in English lessons and other subject areas, too.

“I love reading in the library because it allows me to escape from the world around me. It is very relaxing, too." - Rebecca Lloyd Yr 8

Normandy Experience

Students from years 7 to 10 went on a cross-curricular educational trip to Normandy, France. While there, they visited historic sites such as Mont Saint-Michel and the Jerusalem War Cemetery where members of the Durham Light Infantry lie. The Bayeux Tapestry and Bayeux Cathedral were admired and visits to Omaha Landing Beach and the American War Cemetery took place to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

"France was certainly a new experience for me. It also gave me new opportunities to make friends and try new foods. It was a brilliant week." - Tori Cook Yr 9

Students also enjoyed the scenic port of Honfleur, the Maison Satie Museum, checking out the different foods in the local supermarket and wonderful home-made ice-cream at La Ferme de la Haizerie. Students were lucky enough to be the only school staying at the centre and had fantastic weather for the duration of the trip.

"I really enjoyed it. It encouraged me to make new friends. Le Mont-Saint-Michel was brilliant. However, I enjoyed the Bayeux Tapestry more." Chloe Johnston Yr 9

'Airgineers' Drone Competition

"It was a very exciting day out - it was great to see students from different schools working together. Next year we go to win." - Mrs Atkinson

Mrs Atkinson and Mrs Overton accompanied students to Nissan Sunderland to participate in the Airgineers drone competition. Over the past few months, they have not only built a working drone but have also learnt about the mechanics, too.

The drone has a camera mounted on top, which sends live video images to the linked VR headset. The event was a series of 'capture the flag' matches, where the pilots had to guide the drones to a number of coloured poles. Teams were allocated colours on the 2v2 teams at the start of each game (either red or blue) and needed to change as many poles to their colour by hitting them.

"It was an amazing day - I had so much fun! I can't wait until next year." - Kieran Cruddas Yr 8
