the future of thinking and differently Patchworks

The rate of change is exponentially increasing

We experience a level of change in months that our ancestors experienced in years and decades. The anthropogenic effects on our biosphere are increasingly profound as The Great Acceleration continues. Humans, organizations and systems are struggling to keep up.

We strive for simplicity, yet we live in an increasingly complex world

Three types of complexity proliferate:

  • Social complexity: where stakeholders lack a shared vision of the future or even a common understanding of the problems we face.
  • Dynamic complexity: where the causes of the effects we are experiencing are difficult to find because there‚Äôs not a binary or linear relationship between them.
  • Generative complexity: where the rules of the past are no longer helpful in predicting for or dealing with what might happen in the future.
