Phillip D. Kline is the Director of the Amistad Project for the Thomas More Society. He is also currently a professor at Liberty University School of Law, where he has taught since 2009. Prior to teaching at the law school, he served in Kansas as the Johnson County District Attorney where he managed over 8,500 criminal cases each year.
After completing his studies in political science and public relations, Kline earned his J.D. from the University Of Kansas School Of Law where he served as Associate Editor of the Kansas Law Review and Editor of the Kansas Criminal Justice Review.
Kline’s pro-life leadership, as written by columnist Bob Novak, opened a new front on the abortion wars and placed Kansas in the epicenter of the current battle over the sanctity of human life.
Kline has represented states and state agencies in large, complex civil litigation and large international interests in construction mediation, arbitration, and litigation.

It should not surprise us that the left is using a national crisis to leverage the implementation of policy objectives they have failed to obtain through democratic processes. In doing so, they are fundamentally re-ordering the role of government from a government that protects inherent rights to a government that owns and parses those rights as it deems fit and forces cultural hegemony in the exercise of rights. The left is gaining policy victories they could not achieve through the democratic process by using fear and perpetual emergency powers to suspend and ignore state laws intended to preserve freedom of speech and assembly and laws protecting election integrity.
As a tax-exempt organization, Thomas More Society doesn’t support or endorse candidates, but when our election laws and even our constitution are under attack, we take action. In the past few months, we’ve launched the Amistad Project to defend your right to vote. It’s no secret that 2020 is a critical election — or that life, or as the left likes to say “reproductive rights,” --- is one of the biggest issues at stake.

Tom Brejcha, President, Chief Counsel
Tom Brejcha has been litigating cases in federal and state courts over the last four and a half decades. Since 1998, he has served as president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society, defending the sanctity of life, religious liberty, and family values. He has appeared on Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity shows, MSNBC, CNN, Relevant Radio, EWTN, CBN, the 700 Club, and Chicago Tonight. Many groups have given him awards for his legal work as well as for his pro-life and religious commitments, including Catholic Charities, Pro-Life Action League, National Lawyers Association, Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation, Illinois Citizens for Life, Illinois Students for Life, Chicago Catholic Citizens, and the William Bentley Ball Life and Religious Liberty Defense Award by the Christian Legal Society. He has been a featured speaker at conferences sponsored by the March for Life, National Catholic Bioethics Council U.S. Conference of Cathoic Bishops, SpeakOut Illinois, Law of Life Summit, National Council of Catholic Women, American Bar Association, National Lawyers Association, and more.
Thomas King, Special Counsel
Thomas W. King, III, joins the Thomas More Society as Special Counsel. He is currently General Counsel of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.
Mr. King was admitted to bar in 1975 in Pennsylvania. He has represented clients in the U.S. Supreme Court, Pennsylvania Supreme Court; Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania; Superior Court of Pennsylvania; U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania; U.S. Court of Appeals, and the Third Circuit. Mr. King graduated from the University of Virginia (B.A., 1972); Dickinson School of Law (J.D., 1975). He is a member of the Butler County, Pennsylvania, and American Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Supreme Court Disciplinary Hearing Committee (2000-2006). Mr. King is also a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and American Bar Association Foundation.

Erick Kaardal, Special Counsel
Erick G. Kaardal was born in Redwood Falls, Minnesota and attended Harvard College on an U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship. He graduated from Harvard College in 1988 with magna cum laude honors in economics. At the same time, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves.
After college, Mr. Kaardal attended the University of Chicago Law School where he met his future wife Alison Scott. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1992. After law school, Mr. Kaardal started as an associate lawyer with the law firm of Faegre & Benson in Minneapolis. In 1994, he joined a Minnetonka, Minnesota law firm of Trimble & Associates, Ltd. In 2000, he joined William F. Mohrman to form the law firm called Mohrman & Kaardal, P.A.
For many years, Mr. Kaardal, along with others at the firm, have focused on gaining experience by participating in over two hundred public law cases representing parties opposed to the government, government agencies and government bureaucrats. These cases have involved participation in about one hundred appeals in federal court, state court and agency proceedings. Mr. Kaardal has represented parties at hundreds of hearings opposed to governmental defendants in federal, state court and agency proceedings. Two of these cases have resulted in significant U.S. Supreme Court victories: Republican Party of Minnesota v. White (2002) and Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Mansky (2018).
Mr. Kaardal is a lawyer with a general approach attempting to protect his client’s interests. He attempts to identify and effectively resolve any of his clients’ legal problems. He works to apply his knowledge and experience in effective ways for his clients. Mr. Kaardal served about 10 years as a field artillery officer in the Illinois Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves and Minnesota Army National Guard before retiring as a Captain. Mr. Kaardal is a past Secretary/Treasurer of the Republican Party of Minnesota, past Chairman of the John Adams Society and an Advisory Board Member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federalist Society. He has also been recognized by the Institute for Justice for an Outstanding Contribution to the Cause of Liberty. Mr. Kaardal and Alison Scott married in 1992. They have eight children. The oldest child Samuel graduated from Boston University and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in May of 2017. The rest of the family resides in St. Paul and are members of the Church of St. Mark.
