Were we to live in a world where you were allowed to know only one hors d'oeuvre recipe by heart, bacon wrapped dates should be it.
Were talking about only 4 ingredients. And that's including the skewers and the fussy little herbs you might want to use as garnish.
Sweet, smokey, savory, chewy, melty and so simple to make, we think you may trot these out everytime you have guests, not just for the holidays.

ingredients & Procedure
on a clean cutting board, place a half slice of bacon. At the end closest to you, place 1 date.
Roll up the date in the bacon.
Secure with a skewer.
repeat 23 more times. space evenly on a parchment-lined baking Sheet.
place in your 400F Preheated oven. roast for 25 minutes. Turn the dates halfway through to ensure bacon is evenly cooked.

Place the wire rack where it will be used (away from flammable objects-napkins, drapes, centerpieces, etc.).
Carefully open the chafing fuel cans...
...and place in fuel holders. Place water pan in wire rack.
Fill a pitcher with 2 quarts of very hot (not boiling) water.
Pour water into water pan.
Light the fuel.

If your chafing dish will be out of eyesight while your in the kitchen, make sure an adult is in the room to prevent an accidental fire.
Once you've removed the dates from the oven, arrange in one of the aluminum half-pans. Carefully place in the chafing dish. The edges of the pan might get a little bent while you do this. Simply smooth them with a towel once the pan is in place.
Now would be good time to add those herb sprigs to the top of each date..
