Definition of the cancer

What happens to the cells: Skin cells called melanomas become abnormal and also grow uncontrollably and invade the tissues around it. Skin cancer will build up skin cells that will form a tumor. It mostly effects any where there is skin. symptoms you may see are irregular spots red bumps and scaly patches.

Possible causes of the cancer

If you become exposed to ultraviolet radiation you have very high risk of getting skin cancer. Exprosure to UV light can damage the DNA in skin cells and increse a persons risk for both a melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. There are some rare genetic mutations which make you more susceptible to skin cancer. certain types of skin cancer may be inherited.


To prevent your risk of getting skin cancer you can stay in the shade between the hours between 10am and 4pm. Avoid using tanning beds and burning in the sun. Wear clothing that protects your whole body and make sure not a lot of skin is showing.

How the cancer is treated?

If you have a non melanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis is usually topical that is applied to the skin in a cream or lotion. The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the condition being treated. Retinoids drugs are used for mostly to treat quamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

How the cancer is diagnosed?

The only way to diagnose any type of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma is with a skin biopsy. Like the skin biopsy, this removed skin is examined under the microscope. Sometimes these tumors are found with imaging tests (such as CT scans) or other exams even before the melanoma on the skin is discovered.

How many and what type of people are likely to have the disorder

An estimated 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017. An estimated 9,730 people will die of melanoma in 2017. Melanoma accounts for less than one percent of skin cancer cases. Certain types of skin are at greater risk for developing sun damage and skin cancer.
