Principal's Message

I would like to thank everyone for attending our virtual curriculum night. Thank you for your investment in your child’s education as we work together as a home-school partnership to educate our Huskies. Thank you for your help at home to connect your children online to engage in virtual learning. We appreciate all that you are doing. I have received some common questions from parents over the past two weeks. I’ve included answers to them below. If you have a question, you are welcome to contact me through email (spawlus@troy.k12.mi.us) or phone (248-823-3520). Wishing you a wonderful week!

When will we be able to begin in seat learning?

Answer: The board of education is revisiting this discussion to consider this right now. Look for specific details to be emailed to parents by Kerry Birmingham this week. It's important that all parents fill out the survey that is due Monday for us to know how many students will be returning to in seat learning and how many parents are planning to continue with virtual learning.

Why does it feel like we only have half days of school?

Answer: We are currently using our small group time to complete our state mandated literacy assessments. We are working with students individually during the small group time to complete this as quickly as we can. It will take us about 3 more weeks to complete this with all students. It does feel like the afternoon has less instruction because of this. It will pick up after we complete the assessments. Because of the state mandated assessments, your child might not have direct instruction after the lunch hour. Please know our teachers are working nonstop straight through all of this.

We are struggling at home without enough devices for our children. When do we get our iPads?

Answer: You can contact the TSD Technology Help Desk at 248-823-5092 to request a device or inform them of your situation. The first backorder of iPads has shipped. The district should be able to begin passing these out to students on Sept. 21. When all devices arrive, students currently enrolled in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, and 12 will be contacted with details on how to receive their iPad.

I was told that my student entering grades 4-5 should have their current iPad put into a new case, but I don’t know what I need to do.

Answer: You can go to the Services Building at 4420 Livernois Road, Monday – Friday between 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and the TSD tech team will install the new case.

I cannot log into PowerSchool Parent Portal or have a question about the Parent Portal.

Please email pssupport@troy.k12.mi.us.

Will we have school pictures this year?

Answer: We plan to offer school pictures if and when we return to in seat learning.

TSD Transition Plans Continue

Last week, we told you about the first step of a transition to optional in-person learning with the limited opening of our TSD Preschool. Today, we took another step, with the first phase of in-person services for Occupational and Physical Therapy. As we move forward with planning over the next few weeks, our focus will be on bringing back students in some of our Special Education programs as well as transitioning specific grades back into our general education classrooms in a hybrid model (students would attend in-person class on specific days and learn virtually on others.) If all goes as planned during the phase-in, we would add additional grades in groups over a specified period of time. This transition/hybrid model would be optional and parents would always have the choice to have their children continue to learn in the virtual setting. In order to assist with preparation, it's important for us to know your preference for your own children. We have developed the following survey with some specifics and FAQs in the description at the beginning. We are asking parents to fill out one survey per family before it closes on Monday, September 14th at 10am

Free Breakfast and Lunch

The TSD will offer free breakfasts and lunches to all children under 18 in Troy, thanks to funding from the USDA. We anticipate being able to serve free meals (curbside for now) until the end of December and have a convenient “pre-order” form available for you to identify the number of students participating and where you will be picking up the meals. If your children are eligible for free and reduced lunch, it’s still important for you to fill out a new application for the rest of the school year.

Please see details of the free USDA program, pickup locations and helpful links in the following letter from our Food Service Department:

Free & Reduced Lunch

While the return to school this fall is not what any of us envisioned, we want to assure you the Troy School District Food Service Department is working hard to provide healthy meals for all of our students.

In March, when our schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USDA, which is the federal agency that oversees the nation’s school lunch program, allowed all schools in the US to provide meals at no cost to all students. This program ended for us in Troy on June 12th. As all students will be attending school virtually for now, we will continue to provide lunches and breakfasts curbside. The menu will be posted monthly on the district web-site.

Students that were previously approved for Free or Reduced lunches in 2019-20, will continue to qualify through Monday, October 12th. However, each year a new application has to be on file. Therefore, if you feel that you may qualify for a free or reduced price meal, please print and fill out the attached application. You can drop it off at the Food Service Office drop box, at 4420 Livernois OR scan it and send it to ngervais@troy.k12.mi.us. You can also go to the Troy Schools web-site to access the application and instructions for this year.

Have a great week!
