History and Culture

In ancient times the island was known as Vava'u, which supports the theory that the island was colonised by inhabitants from the Tongan island of the same name. Bora Bora roughly translates to first born, indicating that this island may have been the most important island after Ra'iatea. James Cook sighted Bora Bora in 1769 on his first voyage to the French Polynesia. The island was annexed in 1888.

People have their own dances based on their different culture and their different types of clothing.
