Wetherby AThletic 16 v 1 Wheldrake York Minster Engineering League 4

It was raining goals at The Ings today as Wetherby Athletic (York 4) hit a sweet sixteen past shell-shocked Wheldrake.

The match was only minutes old when Josh Forster rose highest to head past the keeper after a pinpoint delivery from player/manager Chris Plews.

It wasn't long before the second goal arrived when Alex Bairstow bundled the ball over the line.

It was soon 3-0 when Dave McKay steered the ball home for a superb goal.

A mazy run by Josh Wilson saw a clearance fall as far as Anthony Walsh and the hitman made no mistake.

The cream of the crop was scored by Bairstow who beat the keeper with a long range dipping shot for 5-0.

The first of four penalties was awarded after the keeper upended Josh Wilson. Up stepped the gaffer and, much to the amusement of his teammates, he missed the spot-kick!

Walsh scored another soon after before Wilson showed Plews how it was done from the spot after being fouled again!

With the first half coming to an end, the gaffer did get on the scoresheet when his shot was parried into the net by the Wheldrake keeper.

The second half saw the goals continue to flow and following another one by Walsh, substitute Daniel Gibson drilled home.

Josh Wilson helped himself to another couple of goals, including a cheeky chip over the goalkeeper.

Anthony Walsh grabbed his fourth goal of the match when he forced the ball over the goal-line.

Minutes later, Wheldrake scored with a good move down the right.

Josh Wilson found himself in the firing line again and after being fouled again, Josh Forster put his penalty wide, before Wilson himself scored with a good shot.

The final goal of the game came from the penalty spot after Wheldrake's keeper took out Wilson (again). This time sub Chris Rushworth blasted the ball home!

A great win for Wetherby and one that they were definitely worth. The three points lifts them into third place, just six points behind the leaders.

Next weekend, it's a trip to play afc crAyke.
