Pouring Footings Hazelnut Inn

There was quite sometime between getting our foundation formwork all set up and levelled till the time we poured our concrete in them. We had to wait about a month from the time we were ready till pour day. Why you may ask? Well first of all we were under the impression that the building permit was in hand when we started our formwork. As a framing contractor we don’t have to deal with getting the building permit taken care of, that is the ‘builders’ responsibility. They have to deal with getting plans approved by the city and making sure the engineers sign off on all the appropriate documentation before we can start attaching the building to the ground.

We were able to start with our formwork because the formwork is not technically part of the building. However, a month later we finally were approved to start building the project. We immediately got the building inspector to inspect our rebar and size of all our footings to make sure nothing had been missed by our carpenters. As soon as we had our inspection documentation approved and in hand we called for our concrete.

We used a concrete pump truck to move the concrete from the the mixing trucks to the various locations around our site instead of using wheelbarrows to haul it around. This is fairly standard practice now days as it really alleviates the labour force needed and helps with labour intensity as well.

We had pre-placed our vertical j-dowels in our formwork and placed orange ‘mushroom caps’ on them to make sure no work place accidents occurred. These j-dowels are to ensure a proper connection between the footings and the foundation walls occur. Our wall bar grid will be tied to these dowels at a later date.

The pour went off without a hitch, one guy on the end of the pumper hose, one guy armed with a rake to level the concrete into the formwork and a couple guys on magnesium trowels to finish the concrete off nice and flat. The product turned out great and all in all it was a pretty standard concrete pour. If you want to see a condensed video of the pour itself click here.
