My name is Erin Heard. I am a small town girl from Haughton, Louisiana who plans to pursue a career in educating our future leaders. I am currently a junior at LSUS majoring in Secondary Education Biology. I have always been interested in science and I hope through my teaching that I will inspire many students to seek careers in science themselves.

Part One

Section One: Philosophy on Education

I believe that education is what shapes our future. It creates unique opportunities, opening doors for youth that would have been sealed for a lifetime. I believe that teachers are the molders of the world and should help each individual strive to meet their full potential. Not all students are alike and I would like to help each individual by using various learning styles to reach out to each one. As an educator, I will encourage students to learn academically, and help them to become respectable citizens.

A teacher should encourage students to open their minds to education, and I will do so by making my curriculum centered around the interests of the students. Creating an open minded environment invites students in, and by giving students the opportunity to voice their opinions this will happen. I aim to create a positive attitude in my classroom and a feeling of warmth to inspire students to want to learn. I will incorporate hands-on learning, cooperative learning, projects, and individual work that engage and activate students learning.

Teachers need to understand that not one individual is the same as another; there are visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic learners. Incorporating different methods of teaching that span across all unique minds will create the most effective classroom. I will include all students in classroom activities and strive to put discovery in each individual's mind. I want to challenge the minds of students by questioning their beliefs and holding classroom discussions.

Teachers are one of the many role models that young adults are influenced by throughout their childhood, giving guidance and advice to anyone in need. Being a teacher you are looked up to, you are an inspiration and are admired by many. You are who people learn from, so I believe that in being a teacher you need to encourage students to live ethically and strive to help others in life. In my classroom I want to create students that feel the need to better the community and help make our world live longer, even if it is something small it will always matter.

I want to motivate students to learn, to understand, to be productive. I will create an open-minded environment where a student can feel free enough to express their thoughts. I want to create life-long learners that want to expand their knowledge. And lastly, I want to inspire individuals to love education as much as I do.

Section Two: Philosophy on Educational Technology

In a world where technology is constantly advancing and helping people in different ways in day to day life everywhere it is necessary as a teacher to keep current on technological advances in the education department. Keeping current with new technology will help to keep connected to students that have been with technology for as long as they can remember. I will have high expectations in mind when assigning technology specific material and will encourage students to want to learn as much as they can.

In today's society technology is all around us and it is necessary to know how to use it to a certain extent to be successful in any job. Technology in the classroom helps teach students what they need to know to productive in life with this fast paced world. On top of that it creates a way to look at course material in multiple, interesting ways that normal lecture could never do. I hope that with the easy access to information I can challenge my students to open their minds to what all is out there to know about the world.

I hope to make students see information given to them in a different perspective, but I want them to do it in a safe manner. I will make sure that students create passwords that are unique, that they don’t put information on the internet that is personal, and that they can tell which sites are credible. I will make sure that they know how to research appropriate material , and that they give credit to sources.

part two

ISTE Standards for Teacher Standard One: Facilitate & Inspire Learning & Creativity

a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

I created my own game using Scratch software and a cardboard controller, linked to a Makey-Makey, to play the game. My peers and I had to think outside of the box to create the game itself by making us think on a different level than we are used to. This project aligns to sub-standard a. by promoting creativity and inventiveness.

ISTE Standards for Teacher Standard Two: Design & Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences & Assessments

a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.

In my lesson plan I incorporated technology to make my lesson more engaging and interactive. I tried to motivate students with an intro video that aligned to the lesson being taught. I created a Google form for the convenience of the students so they can do homework on the go with their busy lifestyles.

Evidence of ISTE Standards for Teacher Standard Three: Model Digital Age Work & Learning

b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.

c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats.

My group and I had to think of a fun and creative way to introduce a lesson to an elementary level class. I believe this aligns to sub-standard b. and c. by showing students a different way to see a topic of study, and it is done using new age tools that are easily accessible.

Evidence of ISTE Standards for Teacher Standard Four: Promote & Model Digital Citizenship & Learning

a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

The newsletter helps teach students about internet safety and the dangers of giving personal information to strangers. Included, also, are tips on how to create strong passwords, what sites to trust, and what information is appropriate to put on the internet.

Evidence of ISTE Standards for Teacher Standard Five: Engage in Professional Growth & Leadership

a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.

c. Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.

Google is a great tool available to anyone with working internet, and being Google certified shows that you have the skills to create a great learning environment in the classroom. Google also has a convenient way to get in touch with other educators to compare ideas for lessons and new ways to teach material.
