Read Across America with Author Nancy Churnin, author of The William Hoy Story, a 2017 Texas 2X2 Award Winning Book
Bennett stuudents celebrated Read Across America Day with author, Nancy Churnin. Ms. Churnin, who calls Plano her home and works for the Dallas Morning News, has penned several non-fiction books about people who have made a great impact on our world, while overcoming personal challenges. Her books tied in nicely with Bennett's March character trait, perseverance. Ms. Churnin is the author of the popular 2017 Texas 2X2 nominated book, The William Hoy Story, a tale of the first deaf Major League Baseball player who single handedly changed the sport for all time when he introduced American Sign Language into the game. Ms. Churnin shared that this story has also been translated and printed in Japanese. Two of our students were able to read the cover and translate the Japanese to English. Ms. Churnin also shared her latest book, Manjhi Moves a Mountain, a story of an impoverished boy who literally changed the landscape in India by forging a path through a mountain. Bennet Bears enjoyed the presentation as she animatedly shared her stories.

GIRL POWER 2.0: EMPOWERING GIRLS TO BE S.T.E.M LEADERS

The first session of Girl Power 2.0 met during the month of February and the first week in March. Two 4th grade girls and five 5th grade girls met with Mrs. Stallbaumer during their lunch and recess, at least once a week, to plan and work through activities. These girls were the leaders of the Tuesday after-school Girl Power 2.0 club. They were assigned 2-3 girl participants to mentor and guide through the activities during each Tuesday after-school club meeting.

Week 1-Code Ozobot: The objective was to write a program for the Ozobot to perform using the coding language Ozoblockly.

Week 2-Build a Robotic Hand: The objective was to explore end effectors (the part of the robot that interacts with the environment), specifically mechanical end effectors, and use straws, string, and cardstock to build a working robotic hand.

Week 3-Alka-Seltzer Rockets: The objective was to demonstrate and describe Newton’s Third Law of Motion by conducting a chemical reaction that would launch a film canister rocket.

Week 4-Rube Goldberg Machines: The objective was to use items in the Makerspace to create a chain reaction that showed different forms of energy (mechanical, gravitational, sound, light, electrical, or magnetic).

Week 5-Elephant Toothpaste: The objective was to explore the differences between physical and chemical changes.

TINKERCAD 3D PRINTING CLUB

Fourth and fifth grade participants completed several self-paced TinkerCAD tutorials which exposed them to the TinkerCAD software basics. Participants then worked to design a 3D boat and learned to export an .STL file for printing purposes. Mrs. Stallbaumer was very involved in assisting students each week, therefore, there are no pictures of students during this club.

Girl Power 2.0: Registration for session 2 is Closed, as We are now full with 32 girls registered!

Update: Thank you Lisa Webb for volunteering to cover circulation on the days that Girl Power 2.0 meets.

On March 27, participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn from a group of local women engineers who are a part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). During the remainder of the meetings, girls will build a wobble robot.
