Kamiak Bulletin Back to School Edition

On behalf of the Kamiak staff, welcome to the 2021-2022 school year – it’s going to be a great year. We are excited to welcome back our whole student body – “Uknighted” – for the first time since March 2020. Although things may not be exactly the same as they once were, we will co-create the Kamiak we are capable of being together.

As we return to community, I want to emphasize that Kamiak is a place where all are welcome and celebrated. Together, we are all learning and growing every day. For so long, we have done that work from our own places in isolation. Returning to our shared space, it will be so important for everyone to be mindful of one another, encouraging and supporting whenever possible, and willing to show grace and forgiveness. Together, we can establish a place that empowers all to be both brave and safe.

Over the summer, our custodial team (led by Mr. Bailey) has worked tirelessly to prepare the school building for us to return. The floors are so shiny you can see your reflection. They take pride in their work – it shows. And, we are proud of them! Thank Mr. Bailey, and team.

We want our students to be well-prepared and confident as they return to school. That means we need to share quite a lot of important information. I ask that you take time to review this and future messages to be sure that you are ‘in the know.’ At Kamiak, we tend to use weekly bulletins, social media, and Blackboard Connect messages to reach our community. If you are monitoring those platforms, you will have ample access to all we need to share. Please know that we are always eager to hear from our school community. First day of school - Staggered start information:

We look forward to seeing your child for the first day of school, which will be determined based on their grade. Please see below for a reminder of the schedule for the first days of school:

  • Wednesday, September 1: ONLY 9th Grade attend school from 7:20AM to 2PM
  • Thursday, September 2: ONLY 10th Grade attend school from 7:20AM to 2PM
  • Friday, September 3: ALL grades attend school for Early Release schedule (7:20AM to 12:45PM)

Note: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors do not attend classes in-person or remotely on Wednesday, September 1. Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors do not attend classes in-person or remotely on Thursday, September 2. ALL GRADES attend class in-person on Friday, September 3 with classes ending at 12:45pm.


IMPORTANT CORRECTION to previous communication to families regarding the schedule for Friday, September 3: The school day follows an adjusted early release schedule, and classes are scheduled from 7:20AM – 12:45PM, NOT 2:00PM as previously communicated. We apologize for our mistake in the miscommunication regarding Friday’s schedule, and we are equally thankful for all those who alerted us of our error. The first Friday of the school year (September 3) is not only the first day all Kamiak Knights will be on-campus at the same time, but it is also the first Learning Improvement Time (LIT) Friday of the year!

Every Friday (beginning September 3) is a scheduled LIT Day, and follows an EARLY RELEASE bell schedule, with classes ending at 12:45PM.

  • September 17: Photo MAKE-UP Day – for those who have NOT had a photo taken yet. Visit Dorian to place picture orders.
  • September 29*: Curriculum Night *Regretfully, earlier communications included another date in error. Thank you for correcting your calendars.
  • October 4-9: Homecoming Week
  • October 29: Photo RETAKE Day – for students requesting a new photo (Must bring the unsatisfactory packet to exchange for the same packet with a new photo), AND for students who have not had a photo taken yet.

First Days of School: Where to Go, What to Bring, What to Expect


Freshmen: September 1 & Sophomores: September 2

Where to Go

The school day starts at 7:20AM. When you arrive on campus on your designated first day of school, staff will be stationed throughout campus to welcome you to Kamiak and to direct you to the gym for a Welcoming Assembly. This means students do NOT need to know where the gym is or what your schedule is prior to the first day of school.

What to Bring

Bring your face mask and bring yourself! Freshmen and sophomores do NOT need to bring their laptops, textbooks, lunch*, or schedule on their first day. Students who did not check out a laptop on Business Days may need a small bag to bring one home after their first day.

*Kamiak will provide a picnic-style lunch on September 1 and 2. For those with dietary restrictions, please let our kitchen staff know when picking up a meal.

What to Expect

The elements of the first day of school for freshmen and sophomores are as follows:

  • Arrival / Welcoming Assembly – An orientation assembly for the whole grade level. Administrators, counselors, and student leaders participate in this event.
  • Induction and Tours – Tours of campus, questions and answers, orientation to the school facilities; students will receive their finalized schedule from their tour guides
  • Shortened Periods 1-6 – This is a chance for teachers and students to get to know one another, so no textbooks or laptops will be required for classes on the first day for freshmen and sophomores
  • Extended Lunch – During the extended lunch, a picnic-style lunch will be provided. This extended lunch period will also provide an opportunity for those who missed their “back-to-school business day” to collect their materials, turn in forms, and check out a laptop.
  • Farewell Activity – A fun way to celebrate the end of your first day on-campus as a Kamiak Knight!

Schedule Questions

All students will receive their finalized schedule on their respective first day of school. Students with “holes” in their schedules need to report to the Counseling office during the period when there is not a class assigned. Prior to the students’ first day, a finalized schedule is not available.

Looking Up Your Schedule

Student schedules in Family Access may be available to in-person students and their families Monday evening, August 30. With the additional learning options this year and many last-minute moves, establishing the final schedules is taking longer than in some years. If you are new to the district or have forgotten your Family Access password, click on the Forgot your username or password link on the login page and use the email address on file with your child’s school to recover your password.

All students who missed their assigned back-to-school business day will be able to complete the following tasks on the first days of school, either before school, after school, or during extended lunch periods:

  • TEXTBOOK CHECK-OUT: Students will collect textbooks on the 3r floor, near the library.
  • LAPTOP CHECK-OUT: The district is providing a laptop for each Kamiak student. Our expectation is that all students will come to school every day with a fully charged laptop device. Some may prefer to use a personal device. Please know that personal devices may not have school-specfic programs and permissions. Also, Kamiak is not responsible for loss/theft/damage of personal property. A student’s best option is to check out a district-provided device for the year. This form is required for students to be issued a laptop. Bring your completed form with you to the library.
  • ASB VALIDATION: NEW! The ASB validation cost is normally $40. For the 2021-2022 school year, the Mukilteo School District is providing ASB Validation at no expense for our students. Students with ASB validation receive a discount on their yearbook purchase, reduced admission to Kamiak activities and events, free admission to home athletic events, and are eligible to purchase a parking permit. ASB validation will be provided when you receive your school ID during photo makeup day (9/17)
  • YEARBOOKS: Bring your completed Kamiak Payment Form and payment to the bookkeeping office so you can purchase a yearbook. All students get the ASB-discounted price this year ($50), payable by cash, debit/credit card (check payable to Kamiak High School). Note: Yearbooks are sold by pre-order and must be purchased before Winter Break in December
  • PARENT CONTACT FORM: Please bring this completed form to the main office only if you have made changes since last year.
  • PARKING PERMITS: Seniors and Juniors may purchase and receive year-long parking permits from the bookkeeping office on the first days of school.

The following requirements must be met for parking passes:

  1. Current 2.0 GPA (cumulative or from previous semester)
  2. Be clear of all fines—including textbooks and library books
  3. Obtain an ASB validation for the 2021-2022 school year
  4. Provide a valid driver’s license
  5. Provide vehicle license plate numbers (2 vehicles maximum)
  6. Provide proof of current insurance on the listed vehicle(s)
  7. Parking agreement signed at the time of purchase, therefore a parent or other “representative” may not purchase the permit for the student
  8. Have a separate check for $45 made out to Kamiak High School for a parking permit

How to Determine When to See Your Counselor


  • Your schedule is not six (6) classes
  • You are placed in the wrong class (i.e. Spanish III instead of Spanish I)


  • Teacher change
  • Lunch change
  • Change to be with friends
  • Change the order of classes
  • Change in elective / level (unless misplaced)

School Health Room Supplies

Does your child have a medical condition the school should be aware of? During the first few days of school, your student will receive a packet with health history forms that you may complete and return to Kamiak. You can also contact the Nurse directly via email at ArmstrongHossBA@mukilteo.wednet.edu, if your student has any serious medical conditions or needs a health plan that may include medication, treatment, or safety instructions.

You can find forms here. Please drop off health forms and medications to Ms. Armstrong, our School Nurse, in Kamiak's counseling office next week.

Before/After School Health Prep

If your student participates in before/after school activities, sports, clubs, drama, choir, music, etc. you should inform the coach/advisor about their health issues. Coaches/advisors do not always have access to school files, medications, or equipment, so please have your student bring the supplies they need to those activities.

Vaccination clinic

There are still vaccination appointments available for the August 30 Snohomish Health District vaccination clinic held at Explorer Middle School. Sign up online! Anyone 12 and up may get their vaccine at this clinic – students and family members.

Student Absences

Please remember to contact the Attendance Office if your student will be absent from school. And please keep your student home if have a fever, chills cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, runny nose, congestion, new or unusual sneezing, or any other symptoms of COVID. Students should stay home until their symptoms resolve and may need to be cleared to return to activities. Please help us keep our Kamiak community as safe as possible. Cloth Masks Available

Do you need any cloth masks? Kamiak has masks for free, for students who need them.

Beginning fall of 2021, students in grades 9-12 have the option of selecting Mukilteo Virtual Academy (MVA). The Mukilteo Virtual Academy is its own school, meaning it is not an extension of Kamiak.

Kamiak Athletic Booster Club has been a tremendous partner over the years in providing our student-athletes with a great high school athletic experience and providing many College scholarships to deserving Senior student-athletes. Kamiak Athletics may need to rely more heavily upon KABC for financial support for our team budgets in the near future until we can return fully to normal operating conditions.
