Civil Rights Act of 1968 JJ Jessee

Civil Rights Act of 1968

(S)The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed to eliminate discrimination in the action of selling, buying, renting or financing a house. It is also called the " Fair Housing Act".
(Q and Primary Document)The Fair Housing Act stated that it is illegal "To discriminate against any person in the terms, conditions, or privileges of sale or rental of a dwelling, or in the provision of services or facilities in connection therewith, because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, or national origin."
(S)The Fair Housing Act was first given to Congress in 1966, but over the next 2 years it failed to get enough votes to pass. President Lyndon B. Johnson asked Congress to pass the act after MLK died (one of its biggest supporters) as a commemoration to him.
(P)There were many organizations trying to help colored people that were being discriminated against. Organizations like the NAACP helped passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968.
(S) Many African american families had trouble renting or buying homes in certain areas of their towns because of their race. Meanwhile, their loved ones were fighting and dieing at war.

President Lyndon B Johnson's speech about the "Fair Housing Act" highlights the achievements and struggles of passing the act.
