MENTORING INITIATIVE Proposal

"IF A CHILD CAN'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, MAYBE WE SHOULD TEACH THE WAY THEY LEARN" - UNKNOWN

Introduction

At Theodore Roosevelt High School, it has come apparent that freshmen students are not doing well academically. Attempts have been made to improve performance by having Gear Up tutors in some classes that need more assistance. School has also implemented mandatory tutoring to those students failing their math class(es). An awaiting result to be unknown at the moment.

Mentoring has shown to have positive results with individuals whom lack motivation. Creating a program that pairs an older mentor with a student has become a popular all over the world for the following reasons:

  • They provide growth and learning for both participants.
  • Teenage years are very crucial to the development of students. By having a slightly older mentor, students have the tendency to look up to their mentor as role models and open up to them.
  • It is more appealing for parents of mentees, who may feel uncomfortable by having an adult following of with their child.
