Betsy DeVos and Privatization

What is Privatization? De-monopolization is one form, meaning the government relaxes regulations for private institutions so competition can arise between public and private.

DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES:

THOSE IN FAVOR OF PRIVATIZATION PREFER THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE AND ARE SKEPTICAL OF GOVERNMENT REGULATION

THOSE OPPOSED BELIEVE PRIVATIZATION WILL PUT FINANCIAL GAIN BEFORE THE STUDENT AND THAT SOME SORT OF GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IS NECESSARY

In theory, de-monopolization would emphasis the needs of the student before the financial needs of the university, however analysis has proven that a system free from government intervention will likely harm the student. Privatization could help the faculty of universities, giving them well-deserved raises and increased liberty for research, but if it ultimately harms student’s education then it must not be implemented.

EDUCATION SECRETARY BETSY DeVOS

DeVOS AND HER SUPPORTS PROMOTE SCHOOL CHOICE AND THEIR PLATFORM IS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY THE WORK OF MILTON FRIEDMAN.
DeVOS'S NOMINATION WAS HEAVILY PROTESTED DUE TO HER LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND THE PROPOSED VOUCHER SYSTEM.

WHAT ARE VOUCHERS?

VOUCHERS WERE FIRST PROPOSED BY MILTON FRIEDMAN IN 1955. THEY GIVE A SPECIFIED SUM TO PAY FOR GENERAL EDUCATION AT A SCHOOL OF YOUR CHOICE. SCHOOLS WOULD INCLUDE FOR-PROFITS, NON-FOR PROFITS, RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS, AND GOVERNMENT FUNDED SCHOOLS.

THE PROBLEM: USING GOVERNMENT FUNDS TO FORCE STUDENTS INTO UNREGULATED, SEPARATED SCHOOLS.

THE VOUCHER SYSTEM IS NOT THE SOLUTION.

THE WEALTHY CAN SPEND NEARLY ANY AMOUNT ON EDUCATION, BUT THE POOR WILL BE LEFT TO ATTEND THE WORST SCHOOLS. THE HIGHER THE DEMAND, THE HIGHER THE PRICE.

PRIVATE SCHOOL VOUCHERS HAVE ALREADY BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN SWEDEN, CHILE AND THE NETHERLANDS.

those programs have resulted in an increase of socioeconomic and racial segregation in schools.

WHILE SOME FORMS OF PRIVATIZATION MAY BE SUCCESSFUL, DeVOS'S PROPOSED VOUCHER SYSTEM WILL SEPARATE THE RICH FROM THE POOR, CREATING YET ANOTHER UNJUST SCHOOL SYSTEM.
