This Week at Myers Park February 21, 2021

February 21, 2021

We enter this season that calls us to recognize the places in our lives where the light of Christ needs to shine anew. We begin again by recognizing our shortcomings, confessing our sins, and realigning our hope in God. Lent is a season when we prepare our hearts and minds to journey with Jesus through the wilderness, through Palm Sunday, through Holy Week, and then a joyous Easter.

This morning we welcome new members to the life of Myers Park United Methodist Church: Carly Ericson and David Bunn, Hannah Cartwright and James Schwenk, Cherie Cole, Katie and Joey DeCamilla, Judy and Terry McDonald, John Minton, Ernie Munoz, Elizabeth and Ben Vernon, Erin and Bryan White, Sheri Williams, Hillary Faustin Maclean-Wilks, and Royster Wright and Wendy Wallace-Wright.

Join us as we journey through the Gospel of Mark together. Throughout this season churchwide, we will study Mark to learn and slowly journey with Jesus through Mark’s account. For a weekly calendar of readings and to learn more, visit our website.

Join us to have Holy City Waffles (waffle bar with yummy toppings) and welcome Mary Helen Higgs as our Assistant Director of Youth Ministries. We will eat, play games, and get to know Mary Helen more. Sign up here.

Our “We Speak for Such a Time as This” studies continue with both co-ed and women’s groups. Online sessions are held at various times throughout the week. View the schedule and information on our website.

Throughout the month of February, Missions is collecting food and pantry items that are often left off of food drive lists but can make a big difference. For instance, canned goods are great items to donate, but only if the recipients have a can opener. There are so many items and tools we take for granted and overlook when donating. Drop off these items, listed above, under the portico Monday-Thursday before noon.

The Lenten calendar begins February 17, in the middle of what our cultural calendar designates as Black History Month. Beginning February 4, we will honor both of these seasons by presenting a special true story and spoken word series in partnership with Hannah and Shardae Hasan of Epoch Tribe. Each week, we will release a video in Missions’ #livedifferently enewsletter. Subscribe here. The videos will also be viewable on Facebook, Instagram, and our website.

During this Lenten season we invite you to come to our Prayer Cross. Tie a ribbon (provided for you) as you join your church in a guided Lenten prayer practice.

Join us for a “deep dive” Bible study for Lent. This is a great opportunity for youth who want community and a deeper look at the Bible as we follow along with the congregation in the slow read of Mark. Mary Helen will lead the middle school group, and Jason will lead the high school group. Register here.
