Childhood- Jerry West was born May 28, 1938, in Cheylan, West Virginia. When he was younger his dad would beat him if he did something wrong. He had 6 siblings when he was growing up. His brother older David went into war and died in the Korean War. When he was in high school he was never home because he never liked to be home. He would always go over to his neighbors house because they were the only ones in the neighborhood that had a basketball hoop. He went to East Bank High School. When he finished high school he was the only player to ever score 900 points in a season. When his team won the state championship the High changed the name to West Bank High School for one week. In his senior year he was one of the best players in the country. He got recruited by a lot of big colleges. When he was a freshmen in high school he knew where he wanted to go.
College- He went to West Virginia University. He stayed all four years and played every year. He never got hurt when he was playing at West Virginia. In two of his four years he was an All-American. In 1959 he led his team to National Championship but lost to the University of California. When he was a senior in college he was asked to join the Olympic basketball team. He went to the Rome for the 1960 Olympics . They won gold.
NBA- He was picked number one overall in the 1960 draft by the Minneapolis Lakers. Which they later that year changed to The Los Angeles Lakers. In his second year playing he averaged 17.6 points a game and 7.9 rebounds a game. In that year his team went to the NBA finals and played the Celtics but lost. During the 1964-65 playoffs he averaged 40.6 points per game. He went to Finals again but lost to the Celtics again. He is the only player in NBA history to win the finals MVP and lose. In his 14 years of playing he made the playoffs 13 times and only won the championship once. After his 1973-74 season he decided to retire. He is also the logo of the NBA.
