To the BASD Staff, Parents, Students, and Community
Welcome to the BASD e-News. A BASD education works to IGNITE curiosity and imagination, ENCOURAGE creative cooperation and individual growth, and EMPOWER leadership and global thinking. The e-News is designed to share events and activities going on in the BASD and the Lehigh Valley and show how we are #builtbybethlehem. It is our hope that you find it informative outlining BASD student and staff achievements, BASD opportunities, and area events taking place.
If you would like to acknowledge a student or staff member or share an upcoming event, please feel free to e-mail my executive assistant, Barbara Clymer, at email@example.com.
The BASD TV cable channel is up and running. The station runs 24 hours, 7 days a week on RCN Channel 67 and Service Electric Channel 265.

WEEKLY NUTRITION and FITNESS TIPS
BASD Health Matters Monthly #1
The Bethlehem Area School District prides itself on its health services department and the staff that supports it. Each month, we will give you some quick tips from our knowledgeable employees and partners.
Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN
Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District
The ABC Tips - M:
Mushrooms are high in fiber and a good source of the B vitamins, iron, and selenium. Mushrooms are low in sodium and carbohydrates. Plus, just 3 portabella caps have more potassium than a banana. Some of the compounds found in mushrooms are currently being researched for their anti-cancer effects. There are 250 edible types of mushrooms. Some of the most common mushrooms found in a grocery store contain a compound called agaritine. Agaritine can be carcinogenic in high amounts. Cooking the mushrooms will remove the agaritine, making it safe to consume the mushrooms. Try to avoid eating mushrooms raw, like you might see on a salad bar. Try cooked mushrooms as a topping on a pizza, in a veggie burger, or in stir fry.
