Capital Area Intermediate Unit is offering a variety of fun, engaging and hands-on educational camps this summer. Sign up for one or multiple camps this summer. Just because school is out, the learning shouldn't stop!

Camps June 24 - 27, 2019

Environmental Camp: Water Exploration

Where does our water go? A watershed is a land area that channels rainfall and snow melt to creeks, streams and rivers, which eventually lead to the ocean. Plants, animals, humans, and landscape influence water. Students will be immersed in experiences designed to understand the many factors that alter watersheds. Field trips for chemical testing, wetlands wildlife viewing, and water management understanding are included in this camp.

Computer Game Design

Do you need to be a computer programmer to design great games? Not with the right tools! Learn how to create great apps using a program called GameMaker. Using logic blocks and the fundamentals of programming variables, we will develop games similar to many found on the market today. Create game executables that look and feel professional to share with your friends. Participants should bring a USB flash drive (at least 2 Gigs) each day for saving projects. CAMP FULL! LEGO® Battle Tanks

Take your LEGO® building to the next level. Create and battle with the ultimate LEGO vehicle or fortress. Children will choose special abilities for their tank and then build those unique talents into their design. Players will then use their tanks or fortresses to battle other tanks in a physical role playing game that, once learned, can be played beyond this class for years of fun with friends. CAMP FULL! Intro to Coding/Computer Programming

Wondering how some of your favorite games, websites and apps work? Come and learn the basics of coding and computer programming and how much fun it can be. STEAM

This summer camp will provide engaging activities for students that integrate science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills. Hands-on projects will allow the students to expand their knowledge of STEAM. The final day will include an egg-drop challenge!

Intro to Stained Glass

Stained glass is a timeless, beautiful art where creativity has no limits! Artists will learn the basics of the Tiffany (copper foil) method to create a beginner stained glass panel (& sun-catcher, if time). They will learn glass safety, pattern preparation, glass cutting/grinding, copper foiling, soldering and finishing a stained glass piece.

LEGO® Challenge

Extend the play and creativity of your LEGO® building by participating in over twenty activities and competitions. Children will be challenged to create unbreakable vehicles, speedy racers, realistic cities, working amusement parks, artful mosaics, impossible pets, and enormous creatures. Drones and Flight

Do you want to fly drones and improve your skills? What are the rules for safe drone flight? Would you like to learn more about the FAA Remote Airman’s Certification, needed for commercial use? UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Systems) are becoming the future for filming, inspections, security, crop maintenance, and so much more. This camp is designed for those interested in drone flight, drone careers, and cinematography. Participants should bring a USB flash drive (at least 2 Gigs) each day for saving recordings from their drones. Activities will include both real and simulated flight experiences.

STEAM Makerspace

Makerspaces are, at their core, a STEAM activity. Campers will have opportunities to explore their own interests, within the parameters offered. We'll look at "making" in the general sense, building and creating, artistically or technically. Makerspace activities will include 3D design and printing/scanning, beginner programming and coding, building and engineering of small scale and technical models, individual art expression, and crafts.

Warrior Girl Power

Explore the variety of "girl power" activities meant to strengthen our girls and help them to find their voices in this world! We will explore true "warrior girl power" pioneers across all walks of life; try a variety of yoga practices using visualization, meditation, and fun poses, as well as find a spirit animal, explore words of strength, test the uses of positive energy, and keep an open mind.

Running is a great way to have fun and stay healthy. Learn about running and healthy lifestyle choices with at your own pace workouts. This is the first week of a 3-week camp. You can sign up for all 3 weeks to improve distance and speed each week. (Students are not required to sign up for all three weeks.)

RISK: A Game of Strategy and World Domination

Gather around a table or two and learn the camaraderie of world domination. Discover the rules of the classic strategy game RISK and its many variations. Grow as you learn about the world, logic, and patience. Then, play some of the adaptions of this classic game: Star Wars Clone Wars, Star Wars Battle of Endor, Walking Dead, and Castles. 3D Printing and Design

Have you ever wanted to see your design ideas come to life in real physical models you can hold in your hands? The design world is changing by using 3D printers for rapid prototyping. This camp will give you the chance to design your own products and 3D print them in environmentally friendly PLA plastics. Participants should bring a USB flash drive (at least 2 Gigs) each day for saving projects.

Hogwarts™ School of Wizardry

Are you a Harry Potter fan? Do you wish you could have a Hogwarts™ letter mailed to your house? This class is for you because we will experience a week at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On your first day, you will be sorted in Houses. On the second, we will make wands to try some spells. On the third day, we will create potions, and on the last day, we will discover that some mythical creatures are loose in the school. See you at Platform 9 3/4! CAMP FULL! During this week we will explore STEAM in literature, Scholastic DynaMath challenges, genius hour, Belouga explorations, engineering, and much more. Children will explore hands-on, technology, and inquiry based learning activities that challenge as well as engage their minds.

3D Computer Animation

Have you ever wondered how your favorite 3D animated movies and advertisements are created? This camp will focus on 3D modeling, texturing, and animation techniques using the powerful open source program, Blender. Projects will include creating 3D animated logos, nature scenes, camera tracking, and character animation. You will never watch an animated movie the same way again after taking this camp. Participants should bring a USB flash drive (at least 2 Gigs) each day for saving projects.

LEGO® for Girls

It’s time for girls to build! Use the ultimate building block to make what you want. Build whole worlds with friends or create a beautiful pet. Create the tallest tower or the longest bridge. There are no patterns to follow, but your own visions and your own creativity.

Beginner Mindfulness/Yoga with Creativity

Explore the beginnings of a yoga practice using breath, meditation, and poses to strengthen all facets of yourself. Students will also research and create a dream catcher, find their spirit animal, and embrace creative expression via positive energy and an open mind.
