Monkton Park Newsletter Friday 1st March 2019

We were so proud of our Year 3 and 4 gymnastic team this week. On Thursday they performed their routines in front of the whole school as a practice before today's main event. The improvement they have shown over the past few weeks has been so impressive and the whole team can be hugely proud of themselves. Well done everyone!

Parents' Evening

Our parents' evenings will be held on 20th and 21st March this term. We will write soon with information on how to book.

Online Safety

On 3rd April we will be hosting an online safety session for parents run by Karl Hopwood. The evening will start at 6.30pm. We would highly recommend coming along to find out about some of the risks children face online and how these risks can be minimised.

Karl is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre and the education advisory board for CEOP. He has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre), BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency), the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK.

School Catering Provider

From Tuesday 23rd April school meals will be cooked and supplied by a new caterer - Dolce Schools Catering.

So that we can introduce them to you we will be holding a Parent Taster and Introduction Evening on Thursday 14th March at 6.30 in the school hall. Staff from Dolce will be there to speak to parents and samples of meals will be available for you to try. They will also be able to show you how their ordering system works.

Further information about the new ordering system will be sent home in the next couple of weeks.

School closed

Please can we remind you that school will be closed on Friday 5th April for staff training.

Hedgehogs Library Visit

Hedgehogs' class will be visiting the town library on Tuesday morning at 1015. They need some volunteers to walk with them to and from the library. If you are able to spare an hour on Tuesday and would like to help, please speak to Miss Springthorpe.

School Trips

As part of their Tudor topic KS2 are visiting Hampton Court Palace on Thursday 7th March. The cost of the trip is £16.00.

Permission and payment for the trip can be made using Parent Pay or cash/cheques to the school office. Children will not be able to attend the trip without parental permission.

Level 2 Gymnastics

Today, our Yr 3/4 teams took part in the Level 2 Gymnastics competition. Both of our Y3/4 teams were awarded medals. Our team 1, (Patricia, Nusrate, Eva, Katy, ;Hollie-Mae, Heidi) won the event overall and are now through to the next level of competition! 3 of our pupils also won individual medals for coming joint 2nd in the individual completion: Patricia, Eva and Heidi. Congratulations also to our Team 2 who did very well: Ava, Bethan, Nellie, Lewis, Charlie and Tabatha, many of whom achieved their personal bests!

Mrs Porter, Mrs Contardi and Ms Wild were there and SO happy/utterly delighted with the teams, both with the outcomes and their excellent sportsmanship behaviour throughout the event.

We were also treated to exciting displays of gymnastics from Hardenhuish pupils.

World Book Day

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 8th March this year. The children will be given their £1 book token on that day.

This year we would like the children to dress up as a character from their class’ chosen book or theme:

Field Mice - Julia Donaldson Book Characters

Rabbits - Julia Donaldson Book Characters

Hedgehogs - The Day the Crayons Quit

Otters - Mr Men/Little Miss stories

Squirrels - Horrible Histories

Owls - The Dark by Lemony Snicket

Pine Martens - David Walliams Book Characters

Foxes - Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone

Badgers - Traditional Tales and Nursery Rhymes

We would also like the children to take part in the ‘Book Potato Challenge’. For fun we would like the children to have a go at making their favourite book character (from any book not just their class’ chosen one) out of a potato and decorate this in any way they chose.

What characters can you make?

We will have prizes for the best decorated potato at FS/KS1 and KS2. Please bring the finished potato into school on Friday 8th March.

Thank you for your continued support! Please see your child’s class teacher if you have any questions.

Don't forget the town library also has activities for all ages, including Story Explorers every Saturday at 11am for children aged 4+ and The Booksters reading group for years 5&6.

We are looking for an MDSA to join our lunchtime team on a Monday and Tuesday from 11.45am - 1.00pm.

You will be jointly responsible for providing lunch time supervision, both in the hall and outside, providing basic first aid treatment as and when required and setting up tables and chairs in the hall.

Please contact the school office for further information and an application pack.

The FOMPS webpages have been updated, so please take a look at the exciting purchases our events will be raising funds for this year.

The disco held the Wednesday before half term raised another ₤573 for FOMPS, and we are doing well to minimise our waste with everything but a handful of plastic sweet wrappers now being reused or recycled.

There will be a book sale to mark World Book day on Friday 8th March in the school hall from 3pm. We will also have cakes, snacks and uniform for sale. Your donations of cakes to sell will ensure we don't run out early! If you have any good quality books and old school uniform lurking in a cupboard too, your donations will be appreciated in the office before next Friday.

Scarecrow trail entries have been coming in and plans are coming together for the weekend's event. We are still looking for scarecrow sponsors and helpers during the weekend to sell trail sheets and look after the BBQ. Please let FOMPS know if you are interested in helping.

Thank you to all for your continued support.

Lorna, Chair of FOMPS
