What is Matter? BY: MAddisyn cheatwood

Matter exists in three states: solids, liquids and gases. Some scientists also believe matter includes other states, such as plasma and Bose-Einstein. Matter is not limited to living or animate objects. For example, both a camera and a dog are matter, since they take up space and have mass.

A pure substance contains two main parts of matter, elements and compounds. A compound is a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements. An element is a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic. For example, water is a compound made up of two elements, hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

This is an example of a pure substance.

A mixture substance made by mixing other substances together. It can also be defined as a combination of different qualities, things, or emotions in which the component elements are individually distinct.

This is an example of a mixture.

A homogeneous is a mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout. For example, air is a homogeneous mixture of gases. For example a teaspoonful of table salt stirred into a glass of water also makes a homogeneous mixture.

A heterogeneous mixture is a combination of two or more pure substances in which the original substances retain their chemical properties. For example, in some mixtures, the initial substances cannot be detected after they have been mixed.

A solution is a means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation.

A suspension is the action of suspending someone or something or the condition of being suspended, in particular.

A colloid is a a homogeneous, noncrystalline substance consisting of large molecules or ultra microscopic particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance.
