2016 Housing Policy Conference JUNE 17, 2016

On Friday, June 17th, the BIA Baldy View Chapter hosted its 3rd Annual Housing Policy Conference in Ontario at the Double Tree Hotel from 8am-12pm. The event consisted of four panels and a keynote speech given by Wendell Cox, Principal of Demographia. Approximately 270 people attended the event, including many of the region’s elected officials and business leaders.

Over 270 attendees enjoy breakfast at the 2016 Housing Policy Conference

The federal and state speaker panels included a Congresswoman Norma Torres, Assemblymembers Chad Mayes and Marc Steinorth, as well as Dennis Michael, League of California Cities President and Rancho Cucamonga Mayor. The final two panels were dedicated to market rate and affordable housing issues facing the San Bernardino County market. The market rate panelists included Randall Lewis of Lewis Group of Companies, Steve Ruffner of KB Home, Mark Torres of Lennar and Nicole Burdette from Brookfield Residential. The affordable housing panel included Kent Paxton from the Office of San Bernardino County Supervisor Josie Gonzales, Clemente Mojica of Neighborhood Housing Services, Richard Hedrick of iMortgage and Dan Nackerman from the San Bernardino County Housing Authority.

BIA Baldy View Chapter CEO, Carlos Rodriguez, provided a summary of the 2016 housing market activity year to date. Highlights include:

Permits are down 4% in 2016

Annual Closings are up 35%

2016 Market demand is 6800 however annual closings are only at 2192.

Vacant Developable Lots Inventory is down 7%

The Middle-Income Housing Affordability Crisis:

Keynote speaker Wendell Cox, Principal of Demographia, an international public policy firm specializing in demographics, land use and transportation. Cox co-authored the Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey, which includes nine nations and more than 350 metropolitan areas. Cox spoke about the housing affordability crisis currently underway in San Bernardino County and the links to poverty and a migration out of California to other states like Texas.
