Grasslands The african savanna

The Climate of the Savanna in Africa

Average Rainfall: 4 in. during the dry season, 100 in. during the wet season

Average Temperature: Min- 68° Max-86°

November-March is typically considered the "dry season" only receiving upwards to 4 inches. The other season is the "wet season"(April-October) receives around 100 inches or 20 inches per month.

Net Primary Productivity

The savanna grasslands are not very diverse since there are only 8 Kilocalories per square meter per day compared to the Tropical Rainforest with 25 Kilocalories per square meter per day.

Soil Quality:

The soil in the Savanna Grasslands is extremely infertile because all the nutrients needed are only located in the top layer of the soil. Even during the wet season the soil is infertile because all the water and nutrients is soaked up by the plant life.

Invasive and Endangered

The fire ant is a very invasive species who eats plants that are needed by other animals to survive. The fire ants cause problems by hurting other animals such as elephants and large cats in the Savanna and messing up the food supply.

The African Elephant is an endangered species in the Savanna because poachers kill the elephants for the ivory in their tusks which are later sold for high profits. This would be the O in HIPPO because they are being over hunted and killed for the ivory in their tusks.

Also similar to the African Elephant, the Black Rhino is hunted and killed by poachers for its large horn and also sold for a large profit. This would be the O in HIPPO because they are "overharvested" by being hunted and killed for their horns.

Animals in the Biome

The lion is one of the most popular animals in the African Savanna. They have tan colored fur which helps them blend in with the Savanna grass to hunt their prey which is a large reason they have great success hunting in the Savanna.

The African Elephant is also a very popular animal in the Savanna. They have thick skin which helps protect them from deadly bites of snakes and other animals around. They also have a very strong trunk used to carry water around.

The giraffe is another popular animal in the Savanna. Its long neck allows it to reach food from taller trees that the other shorter animals cannot reach. This gives the giraffe's an advantage of more food resources.

Plants in the Grassland Biome (The African Savanna)

The Umbrella Thorn Acacia is one of the most recognizable trees in the Savanna Grasslands. This tree can survive on very little water and in blazing hot temperatures during the day and freezing temperatures during the night.

The Bermuda grass is the most recognizable grass in the Savanna, it is known for its tan color almost looking dead. It survives well in the Savanna because it can survive during the summer and it grows in frequently distrupted areas with fires, flooding, etc.

Elephant Grass is another popular type of grass in the Savanna Grasslands. This plant grows by river banks where the soil is very rich and it is used by farmers as food for their farm animals.
