Gorokan Public School Newsletter - Week 10, Term 3, 2020

Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

At Gorokan Public School we believe that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little “extra” that the students, staff and community contribute to the school on a daily basis. I would like to congratulate and thank everyone for what has been a wonderful term of sustained effort and teamwork. With everyone going beyond what is expected of them and working together - it makes for a great school especially in these unprecedented times.

Term 4 COVID-19 Restrictions

At the beginning of the term, I shared with you the COVID-19 guidelines for NSW schools. Thank you for your adherence to these guidelines and your ongoing support. Your compliance and support has maintained the safety of students and staff, and I sincerely thank you for your efforts. I am expecting the Department of Education to release their guidelines for the term ahead in the immediate future and I will communicate any changes to the current restrictions to the community as soon as they become available. Like you, we are really hoping that the restrictions currently affecting our school transition programs will be lifted allowing for face-to-face opportunities for our new students to familiarise themselves with the staff, other students and our beautiful school setting.

Kindergarten Orientation

I am hoping that given the present containment of the Corona Virus currently in NSW, that restrictions will ease and that we will be able to welcome parents and carers back into the school. However, if restrictions continue, we are prepared and have gone to great lengths to provide useful information to our community in preparation for students starting school in the new year.

A number of information videos have been prepared covering key topics relating to our great school. More will be produced until all essential topics have been covered. Last Friday, a professional photographic company was engaged to produce a virtual tour of the school to orientate new students and their parents and carers. The preview looks amazing and I look forward to publishing this great resource next term.

Kindergarten orientation parent information topics covered so far this term:

1. Introduction

2. Technology for Learning

3. Behaviour Management

4. Learning Support

Further parent information topics:

5. Virtual School Tour

6. A Kindergarten insight into school - Interviews with our current Kindy students

7. Literacy and Numeracy

8. Live Stream - interactive question and answer session

Should restrictions be lifted, additional activities will occur including a meet and greet morning tea, play group sessions and a teddy bear’s picnic.

Wyong District Garden Competition

Earlier this year, we entered the Wyong District Garden Competition. We entered both the Culinary (Kitchen) Garden, and the School Garden divisions. We were up against other public and private schools in the Wyong area.

It’s a really tough competition and many of the schools we were up against are truly beautiful and special to their own school communities. However, I am pleased to inform our school community that they didn’t compare to our incredible school and we won both divisions. I am really proud of this prestigious award and you should be too.

Moving forward, let’s make sure we look after our gardens so that we can enjoy them every school day. Congratulations and well done team Gorokan!

New LED Sign

You may have noticed that our electronic school sign has been repaired and it has been updated with great information for the community to enjoy about our incredible school.

Safe, Respectful Learners

Congratulations to all our students who are successfully achieving our behaviour levels for their efforts in striving to be safe, respectful learners. I’m really enjoying seeing all the Bronze, Silver and Gold bands on the wrists of more and more students. Keep up the great work and enjoy your upcoming rewards day.

Parent Feedback Opportunity

Once again, I would like to invite all parents and carers to complete the Partners in Learning online survey at the link below. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. This survey will close on Friday 25th September. Your responses are very much appreciated and highly valued in assisting the school in its pursuit of excellence.

Mobile Phones

I would like to remind all parents and carers that as per the Gorokan PS Mobile Phone Policy, mobile phones must be handed in at the office before school, with a note explaining the reason for the phone to be brought to school from a parent or caregiver on their initial drop off. A copy of the policy is available from the office if required.

Staff Appreciation

I would like to thank our kind and caring staff who support our students and their learning every school day. They have worked very hard this term to ensure all students have an engaging education and we are very lucky they work at our school. Thank you to our amazing teachers, support staff and the school admin team for another wonderful term.

Home Reading - Please continue to access the PM ecollection range of books over the holidays and encourage your child to write a simple recount of events from each day of the holidays.

Stage One

Current Learning

Stage One students are celebrating their Term 3 achievements. They have shown positive gains in behaviour and learning, working hard to reach grade, class and individual goals. Congratulations to all our Bronze and Silver Level students! Year One and Two students have been writing persuasive texts and using descriptive words that appeal to the emotions of the reader. In mathematics, we are learning to identify the mass of heavy or light materials using a pan balance. Students are learning how art can tell a story as they view and represent Aboriginal artworks. They are continuing to experiment with lines and colours.

Holiday Reading - It has been wonderful watching students’ reading skills flourish after the disruptive start to the year. Why not keep it up with some holiday reading? Students should select books on topics of interest and read for enjoyment to maintain their reading habits over the holidays. Students can access a collection of appropriately leveled books through the following link by using their login and password.

Celebration of Learning

1B students are exploring number patterns both in the classroom with counting games and outside, as they combine mathematics and movement. They have made two short videos of their learning.

Mr R Johnson - Relieving S1 Assistant Principal

Stage Two

Current Learning

Stage Two students have been learning about the lifestyle, traditions and culture of Japan. Last week the students were very fortunate to be able to chat via Zoom with Mr Holley's sister who lives in Tokyo. They were able to ask Ms Holley questions about the type of foods eaten in Japan, the climate, clothing, her favourite travel destinations and how long she plans on staying in Japan. It was a fabulous experience for our students and we thank Mr Holley for organising it for us.

Book Bank Readers - Please encourage your children to keep up with reading during the holidays. Students can read their Book Bank books to support reading at home.

School Uniform - Please make sure that your child is wearing the correct uniform to school. We are seeing a lot of branded jumpers and track suit pants being worn. Please ensure their jumper is clearly labelled with their name and class.

Celebration of Learning

Congratulations to the following students who received awards last week:

  • 3M - Lily S and Paiten D
  • 3L - Logan H and Indianna D
  • 4W - Lily H and Lilah M
  • 4R - Jack S and Sophia B
  • 4M - Andrew G and Paige R

Mrs R Ranse - Acting S2 Assistant Principal

Stage Three

Current Learning

Science & Technology - Students have been learning about light and experimenting with light and how it travels in a straight line.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden - Our students continue to have a great time participating in our SAKG program with their class teacher and Mrs King. They have had fun cooking over the past two weeks. We love heading down to the kitchen and discovering what's on the menu for the day. We never know just what we will be cooking until we get there. We love the surprise!! Students also love working in the vegetable garden and collecting eggs from our chooks.

School Uniform - Please make sure that your child is wearing the correct uniform to school. We are seeing a lot of branded jumpers and track suit pants being worn. Please ensure their jumper is clearly labelled with their name and class.

Mobile Phones - Students bringing mobile phones to school are strongly discouraged. If essential for safe travel to and from school, students must have Principal approval and be signing their mobile phones in at the office at the beginning of the day where it will be locked away, and then signed out at the end of the day. Students are not to use their mobile phones within the school grounds for safety reasons. If you need to communicate and get a message to your child, please phone the office. Please discuss this issue with your child.

Celebration of Learning

Our Year 6 students have been sitting the Academic Tests for Gorokan High School. The high school has now received these and we will receive student results in the coming month. We will notify students of their results.

Class Dojo App - We hope that you are enjoying engaging with the Class Dojo app and that you are using it to track how your child's day has been. A reminder that teachers will not respond to messages sent via this app. Please phone the school if you wish to speak to your child's teacher.

We hope you all enjoy a fantastic holiday and spending time with your families!

Mrs K Day - S3 Assistant Principal

History - All classes have been learning about National Parks in history lessons over the past two weeks. K-6L worked together to create a painting of Lake Munmorah Conservation Area. Some of the students in K-6G have been using technology to build a national park using Minecraft. What a creative bunch!

Happy Holidays - We hope that you have a happy, safe and relaxing holiday with your families. There are plenty of things to do that are COVID-19 safe in our area. Think about visiting our local library, playing at the park or going on a walk around some of the beautiful rock pools and beaches that are close by. Remember to be kind to each other and enjoy this time together.

Celebration of Learning

During Grade Gathering this week, we had many students receive rewards for their great behaviour and learning. Congratulations: Elo, Mallee, Jarvis, Noah A, Claudia, Johnny, Amelia, Nicole, Jordin, Ryland, Sienna and Kaia.
