Kindergarten Registration Superior North Catholic District School Board

Starting school is a big step for your child and your whole family. It’s a wonderful and exciting experience - it also means a big change for you and your child.

We want to help you get off to a great start by giving you and your child information that will help you prepare. Together, we will help your child feel confident and excited about starting school.

“Kinder-garden” – how children learn and grow

The kindergarten environment, both in the classroom and outdoors, is filled with enriching opportunities to play, wonder and learn. Throughout the day, children are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination, to demonstrate early reading and writing behaviours, to design, build and construct, to draw and paint, to listen and talk, and to question and be curious. All of these skills are part of the important foundation for lifelong learning.

Every day the educators provide exciting experiences. Children explore, discover, inquire and problem-solve together.

Children learn best through real-life experience. Playing, experimenting, doing things, taking on different roles, imagining, pretending - these are all important components of learning. Educators will combine learning areas, both in and outside the classroom to create learning opportunities that resemble real life.

Through play children learn academic skills such as reading, writing, math and science, problem-solving, creative thinking and essential social skills.

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. It is through play that children learn about the world around them and how it works.

When play is allowed to be child driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue.

"Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn." – Dr. Fred Donaldson
