Otago Rail Trail Valleys and gorges

A dramatic sunrise had us up early for the viewing before breakfast on our final day on the trail.

It was a relatively warm start and the dramatic cloud formations continued throughout the day providing a magical photographic backdrop until they finally delivered on their promise literally 10min after we had completed our journey arriving at the final town of Middlemarch.

On our 2:15hr return trip retracing our journey in the reverse to where it all began 4 days ago in Clyde, we witnessed many soggy riders slogging it out in the pouring rain! By the time we were on our trip back into Queenstown, the sun was out shining again. We have heard from many of our hosts along the way, that they love Otago Central for its true 4 seasons and all of these can be experienced in a single day... very much like home!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our little cycling adventure made more enjoyable by not getting rained on, but for those that enjoy pedal power, we can highly recommend putting this one on your list. And for those not so keen on pedalling under your own steam? Well you can still do it, as close to half the bikes available are now e-bikes and the trail is as close as you can get to being flat! So no excuses for anyone not to do this epic and fun adventure!

Apologies to those that don’t like landscapes, but Jenny was getting tied of modelling for me in action! And quite frankly, I much prefer photos without people in them!

Oh, and don’t hold your breath for daily posts of our final few days... if you’re lucky we might rap up the last few days into a single post a little later... until then feast your eyes...
