Jean Flanagan Volunteer, Zambia 2016

The team were working in two schools: Sables Nua in the town of Kabwe; and a community school in Kangombe, a forty minute drive from Kabwe.

Kangombe staff and students.
Some students and volunteers at Sables Nua.

I was placed in Kangombe. This was my view each morning before the children arrived.

We left on our bus journey to school at 7 am and did not finish school until 1 pm.
This is what most of the classrooms looked like in Kangombe. If you look closely you can see Mr. Herbert's yellow bike! Mr. Herbert was my teaching partner.
Myself and Mr. Herbert with some of our Grade 4 students.

While we were there we...

...introduced 'Word of the Day' and a reward system to the school.
We held a career day...
We also painted the school while hosting some fun activities for the children.

The volunteers in Sables Nua set up a 'Girls Club' to empower the girls of the school.

Gender equality was a Global Perspectives topic we were very passionate about, which triggered the idea for a girls club.

We hosted a career day for the girls with only female speakers.
We played games, danced, sang and did art activities with the girls.
We wrote a song with the girls called 'Sables' Girls' which we then recorded at a recording studio!
It wasn't just work though...

We visited one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls & visited a safari in Botswana.

Here we are standing on the border of Botswana and Zimbabwe!
During the weekends, we participated in different activities with other NGO's, such as a walk for peace with Restless Development.
Here is our friend, Brian, teaching us how to make the staple Zambian dish - nshima.

It's safe to say our 6 weeks spent teaching in Zambia were unforgettable.

Applications for Volunteer Programme 2017 are now open. If this looks like something you'd love to do click apply, you won't regret it!
