An Aluprof Case Study
Located in the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage site of Edinburgh’s Old Town, this development has created over 1,100 new student rooms in a scheme that is strongly rooted in the historic city and enjoys an array of onsite-student resource, amenity and social spaces. This project for the University of Edinburgh was delivered in association with JM Architects and HarrisonStevens Landscape Architects with Balfour Beatty Construction as Main Contractor.
Aluprof systems were supplied and installed by Marshall Brown Windows and consists of a modified MB-SR50N Curtain Wall System which carries an engineered hardwood feature profile, the MB-70 Window and Door System, and the MB-78EI Fire Rated Partition System. The external finish on the systems is RAL 1035 Metallic Powder Coating.

Aluprof systems used on the project
The system has been designed for the construction and execution of light-weight curtain walls of the suspended or filling type, roofs, skylights and other spatial structures. A load bearing structure consists of vertical (mullions) and horizontal (transoms) aluminium profiles of box section, appropriately joined with each other and accessories assigned the function of a sealant and connector. Load-bearing profiles which are flush on the inward side of the facade feature constant width of 50mm.
MB-70 is a modern aluminium system intended for realizations of exterior architectural building elements requiring thermal and acoustic insulation, such as: various types of windows, doors, vestibules, display windows or spatial structures. The system profiles have a three-chamber structure. The structural depth of the window sections is equal to 70 mm (frames) and 79 mm (casement), and for doors: 70 mm and 70 mm respectively. Such assumed depths of casement and frame sections give the effect of one surface from the exterior side after closing - in the case of the window, and the facing effect to the surface of casement and frames - in the case of doors.
The system of fire-proof walls MB-78EI can be used to execute internal or external partitions with single and double doors and technical windows of fire-proof class EW15, EW30, EI15, EI30, EI45 or EI60 or EI90, as provided under the following standard: PN-EN 13501-2+A1:2010. The system has been classified as non-fire propagating (NFP). It may also be applied for the purpose of building smoke-proof constructions.
