MEET THE STAFF

7x Atlantic 10 Coach of the year, Jon Riley, enters his 14th season as head coach of the VCU Women's Track & Field program and 12th in charge of the Men's team. Riley employs three key ingredients; dedication, commitment, and passion. While these three words are often associated with Coach Riley, they are also descriptors of his teams and coaching philosophy.

Ethan Tussing — enters his 15th season with the Rams. During his tenure as the Rams throws coach he has over seen 1 All-American, 1 Second team All-American, 1 USATF National Qualifier, 14 East Preliminary Qualifiers, 3 USATF Junior National Qualifiers, 15 A10 Champions, 3 CAA Champions, and 2 A10 Conference Meet Records. His student-athletes hold every school record in the throwing disciplines.

Tom Sage — enters his 8th season with the Rams as the hurdles, jumps, and multi coach. Under his tutelage Sage’s has assisted 6 East Regionals Qualifiers, 1 USATF Juniors National Qualifier, 16 A10 Champions, 1 A10 Confernce Meet Record, and 8 School Records. In 2019 Sage’s men’s 400 hurdlers ranked 11th nationally in the USTFCCCA event squad rankings. 2018 the women’s 400 hurdlers ranked 5th nationally in the USTFCCCA event squad rankings.

Kiara Porter - returns to VCU after serving as Director for Business Operations at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Porter a former Ram was a 2x All-American, 5x A10 champ and member of the women’s 2015 A10 championship team. Porter still owns several school records at VCU currently.

New first time freshmen applying to VCU must complete the Common Application. Students who apply using the Common Application can log in to their VCU VIP page to check their application status online to be sure we have received all required materials (admission decisions are not provided online).

NCAA D1 ELIGIBLIty

The 7 Steps Toward Becoming a Student-Athlete
  1. Ask your school counselor for a list of your high school’s NCAA core courses to make sure you take the right classes.
  2. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org.
  3. Check with your counselor to make sure you will graduate on time with the required number of NCAA core courses.
  4. Take the ACT or SAT and submit your scores to the NCAA using code 9999
  5. At the end of junior year, ask your counselor to upload your official transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  6. Complete all academic and amateurism questions in your NCAA Eligibility Center account at eligibilitycenter.org.
  7. After you graduate, ask your counselor to submit your final official transcript with proof of graduation to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
