Jelly Bean day 22nd April

History

Boston confectioner William Schrafft was a man who created the Schrafft's company and also invented Jelly Beans.

Turkish Delight

Before Boston confectioner William Schrafft invented Jelly Beans, he was inspired in the sweets Turkish Delight.

He liked the texture of them but wanted something that had a hard exterior so it could be more transportable.

Here you find out about the production of Turkish Delight:

It started when Jelly Beans were first mentioned in 1861, when Boston confectioner William Schrafft wanted people to send his Jelly Beans to soldiers during the American Civil War. Nearly nobody knew Jelly Beans until July 5, 1905, when Jelly Beans were mentioned in the Chicago Daily News. The advertisement helped Jelly Beans to be sold for nine cents per pound.

With this link you can find more about the company itself:

Historians say that in 1930s in USA the Jelly Beans were due to their egg-like shape eaten at Easter. With the invention of plastic Easter eggs, Jelly Beans could go inside.

After the Idea of Schrafft's, a company called "Jelly Belly" was made which is till today the most Jelly Beans making company in the world.

A thing that was special about this company was the invention of the "Jelly Bean Challange". Now you had a fun game where you had a bag with bad flavoured and good flavoured beans.

(But I think everybody knows what the "Jelly Bean Challenge" is, right?)

How to Celebrate

In order to celebrate Jelly Bean day, you have to be very creative because it's not only about eating Jelly Beans, but it is over making interesting designs, cocktails, mocktails and so on.

Sometimes people do these insane creations which are in a way very interesting, but very time consuming.

(But don't worry you don't need to do this!)

Here is a short report of the Jelly Bean day:

But good to know is, that the only thing you need to do, is to eat these colored Beans!
