Lower School Library/Design Lab Newsletter January 2018

Kindergartners practiced reading with the Early Reader library book collection.

First Grade's Forest

First Graders were read a story about President Teddy Roosevelt's visit to the Redwood Forest and saving the national parks. The students then worked in pairs to design and build a tall sequoia tree that could stand up on its own.

Dewey Decimal Detectives

First, second, and third grade students learned that the nonfiction books are organized using the Dewey Decimal System. Students then investigated each category of the Dewey Decimal System with games and worksheets.

Folk Tale STEAM

Second Graders read about the raven myth in their Pacific Northwest Native American unit. In the myth, the raven has to fly over a mountain to get to a lodge. The students took their lesson to the Design Lab and constructed a lever using a limited number of materials that could deliver a model raven a distance of 3 feet to the lodge.

Fourth Graders studied the humor genre.
Fifth Graders researched Mars utilizing both print and online resources.
