Later on in his life, he and his father fled from Poland, trying to escape the Nazis, but returned after learning the Russians also invaded. When he returned to Poland, he joined the Rhapsodic Theater, an underground group devoted to preserving Polish culture. In 1942 he joined the priesthood. In 1978, he became pope.
