The Citrus County Education Foundation (CCEF) recently held the annual First Library kick-off luncheon to launch the 2017-18 program year. Each year, the CCEF First Library children’s literacy initiative gives thousands of books to pre-K and kindergarten children in Citrus County public schools so they can begin to build a home library of their own.
During the festivities, Altrusa of Citrus County presented Shaunda Burdette, executive director of CCEF, a check for $3,410. This donation was a result of the Oct. 5 Altrusa fundraiser, Bunco for Books.
“Altrusa has been an amazing partner with CCEF from the beginning of the program in 2012,” said Eric Head, CCEF board member, adding that “they have been very generous with their time as well, serving as guest readers in the classrooms every year.”
This year, CCEF is partnering with Storybook Treasures to expand the program to every pre-K and kindergarten classroom, as well as provide additional literacy resources for teachers and parents.
“It is hoped that additional groups will want to join in and donate to help with the total cost of this amazing program,” Burdette said. “Becoming a strong reader as early as possible has a profound impact on a child’s life.”
